Hillary, McCain Almost Even in Poll

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton matches up well against Sen. John McCain in early polling about a possible presidential contest in 2008.

A Time magazine poll released Sunday found McCain, R-Ariz., at 49 percent and Clinton, D-N.Y., at 47 percent among registered voters when people were asked which candidate they would support for president if they had to decide now.

McCain had a 10-point lead over the Democratic nominee from 2004, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, and a 9-point lead over 2000 Democratic nominee Al Gore in similar matchups.

Fifty-six percent of those surveyed said they have a favorable opinion of McCain and 53 percent said they have a favorable view of Clinton.

While Clinton is an early favorite to win the Democratic nomination for president, some have voiced concerns whether she be competitive with the Republican candidate in the general election.

The poll of 1,003 adults was taken July 13-17 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

McCain will never be our President. I disagree when many of us define him "a Giuliani of Arizona". Giuliani would be and probably will be the best choice to win.

Only 4% undecided? Was this poll held at gunpoint?

The MSN wants this matchup really bad, it's so obvious.

The irony is that McPain has no idea how the media plans to turn on him.

No, there are worse people than Hitlery or McLame. Think of the possibility of Jimmy Carter returning to the White House. Clinton and McCain are merely opportunists; Carter's really nuts!

The McCain campaign placed thousands of these calls in Michigan on Monday night Feb. 21 and late on primary day, Feb. 22, 2000. The campaign initially denied making the calls. Bush responded angrily to "calls that call me an anti-Catholic bigot." The calls remained an issue in the campaign right into Super Tuesday. Strategist Mike Murphy wrote the copy.

This is a Catholic Voter Alert. Governor George Bush has campaigned against Senator John McCain by seeking the support of Southern fundamentalists who have expressed anti-Catholic views. Several weeks ago, Governor Bush spoke at Bob Jones University in South Carolina in South Carolina. Bob Jones has made strong anti-Catholic statements, including calling the Pope the anti-Christ and the Catholic Church a satanic cult! John McCain, a pro-life Senator, has strongly criticized this anti-Catholic bigotry, while Governor Bush has stayed silent while seeking the support of Bob Jones University. Because of this, one Catholic pro-life Congressman has switched his support from Bush to McCain, and many Michigan Catholics support John McCain for president.

I meant MSM, but you're right. Good thing they don't pick the candidates.

Well, Time magazine might be running McPain, but the Republican Party surely never will. He has ZERO chance of winning the primaries.

George Allen or Rudy would crush Hillary by 53.5-45.5 in a national presidential election. Hillary is unelectable without a constitutional amendment to eliminate the electoral college and use a popular vote system.

"Rudy? the 'take your guns' and appoint liberals to the bench RINO???? How special!"

I don't see why so many FReepers get excited about Rudy the RINO either, but some do.

Remember, he ran for Mayor of NYC on both the Republican and Liberal Party tickets.

To quote from the Liberal Party website in describing its members:

Republicans include: Senator Jacob Javits, Attorney General Louis Lefkowitz, also New York City Mayors John Lindsay, and Rudy Giuliani. Democrats include: Governors Averill Harriman, Hugh Carey, and Cuomo; Senators Moynihan, Schumer, and H. Clinton; also Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Clinton. In fact, since the Liberal Party's inception, no Democrat had ever won statewide office in New York State without our endorsement.

A perfect match.

Hillary, McCain Almost Even in Poll

This makes sense since their values are essentially identical

Giuliani would be and probably will be the best choice to win.

I'm not strong on Rudy because of the social issues but I could get behind him as the nominee because I think he would at least be a strong L&O president and a strong WOT supporter. McCain I simply have no confidence in anything he says. He's betrayed our trust far too many times for his own vainglorious ego.

A Rudy Giuliani presidency would take the GOP back to its pre-Reagan days. That's why I will work very hard against him in the primaries.
