BOULDER - As a running columnist for the Boulder Daily Camera, Mike Sandrock had little interest in the JonBenet Ramsey investigation until he saw a photo in his paper's newsroom.
The picture staring back at him, Sandrock remembered the summer of 2002 in Paris like it was last week.
Sandrock travels the world covering running events, but this trip was used for research on an Ernest Hemmingway book he's preparing.
Beneath his Paris loft, Sandrock looked for motivation in a bookstore named Shakespeare and Company, a hangout of Hemmingway's in the 1920's where his thoughts and career once started to blossom.
Sandrock met many tourists in the historic shop, and shared several conversations, including many talks with a John Mark Karr.
"He was just a regular guy, clean cut, very pleasant in fact," said Sandrock.
The topics quickly focused on JonBenet Ramsey and Boulder, Colorado after Sandrock's occupation came up.
"He said what do you do? I told him I'm a columnist with the Daily Camera in Boulder, and he got so excited," said Sandrock.
Maybe excited was an understatement, as every word thereafter, was about the town and the story.
"He knew everything about it, everything," said Sandrock.
Karr recited many facts about Boulder, from landmarks to the location of the Daily Camera.
"I got the impression he had been in Boulder, then I thought he just saw the documentaries," said Sandrock.
Documentaries produced by CU Professor Michael Tracy, whom Sandrock knew, and someone Karr wanted to know.
After talking with Karr on several occasions that summer, Sandrock was no longer interested in the subject, but later agreed to put Karr in touch with Professor Tracy through e-mail.
"I got the impression he wanted to talk more, but I stopped the conversations when he got into how the girl died, I just was not interested in that," said Sandrock.
Sandrock said Karr never discussed having visited Colorado, and never got the impression that Karr was a murderer, only extremely consumed with JonBenet Ramsey and her death.
"That's the thing, he wasn't that different, just obsessive, even in Boulder you meet a lot of people that are obsessive," said Sandrock.
Let's be patient. I think it's the guy and that they have been doing "underground" on this case for a long time. The little arrogant beast "got caught" by his own cleverness.
Can't believe what I just heard on Dateline. John Douglas is on and he said that John Ramsey told him he ripped the duct tape off of JonBenet's mouth and *tried to resuscitate her* - and that told Douglas right there that the parents had nothing to do with JonBenet's death.
I feel so sorry for those little boys, their lives are going to be so difficult now. How sad.
This serial killer had top security clearance from the FBI. He wrote the software they used in the White House. The FBI used to come see me once a year about renewing his Security Clearance. They acted like they knew everything about him .... I was just a casual aquaintence and they checked with me every year. They knew everything about him except that he was a serial killer.
He seemed just as normal as any nerd. But he was caught trying to kill his 22nd victim. The Florida press called him the Vampire Rapist.
I knew him in college... I never suspected anything. After college we exchanged Christmas cards. Whenever I was in D.C. we would meet for lunch. He was married and had a son. He seemed quite normal, but he was a serial killer.
so he knew exactly what time to arrive, what time they would leave for the party, so when he got to the house from the airport (by cab?), he could be sure the house was empty? and what time did he leave the house, did he catch a cab back to the airport on the night of Christmas Day? this isn't like Manhattan, where you walk outside and find a cab 24 hours a day.
well, the only way I will believe that is if I see airline ticket receipts.
the DNA in this case - is only a partial spread, the complete set of markers is not present (according to Henry Lee). so the DNA match, if it materializes, isn't going to be totally conclusive. the DA is going to have to definitively place him in Boulder.
who is John Douglas? did he witness this act? otherwise, its hearsay.
Yes. Me too.
The family had been out of touch with him for years and his father said he thought he was dead. I don't know what the boys thought or were told. I can't imagine how this is affecting them all.
Well after the murder.
Former FBI criminak profiler who was hired by the Ramseys to help clear their name.
Dateline again - Yikes, Smit showed the "crime scene" photos yet again of "no snow" around the house. These were taken after the sun came up, not at the time JonBenet was being murdered. He is trying to refute the "no footprints in the snow" allegations of police that tends to refute the intruder theory.
All that "protesting too much" by showing misleading photos just shows me they're wrong on this point, as well as others.
"so he knew exactly what time to arrive, what time they would leave for the party, so when he got to the house from the airport (by cab?), he could be sure the house was empty?"
Not necessarily. He might have expected them to be home and just lucked out that they weren't.
Or he could have arrived the day before.
say what? John Brennan Crutchley?
That's creepy.
But it's like so many killers' neighbors who describe the guy as friendly.
There has to be hard conclusive evidence such as fingerprints or DNA to have me believe this kook did it.
#25 ... wonder if he molested his sons too? Or just little girls?
Most serial killers are VERY intelligent and why they get away with it if not eventually caught.
Just curious, why are you so convinced he is the one?
Don't know.
I remember the post also - it was fairly new freeper who posted it.
