BOULDER - As a running columnist for the Boulder Daily Camera, Mike Sandrock had little interest in the JonBenet Ramsey investigation until he saw a photo in his paper's newsroom.
The picture staring back at him, Sandrock remembered the summer of 2002 in Paris like it was last week.
Sandrock travels the world covering running events, but this trip was used for research on an Ernest Hemmingway book he's preparing.
Beneath his Paris loft, Sandrock looked for motivation in a bookstore named Shakespeare and Company, a hangout of Hemmingway's in the 1920's where his thoughts and career once started to blossom.
Sandrock met many tourists in the historic shop, and shared several conversations, including many talks with a John Mark Karr.
"He was just a regular guy, clean cut, very pleasant in fact," said Sandrock.
The topics quickly focused on JonBenet Ramsey and Boulder, Colorado after Sandrock's occupation came up.
"He said what do you do? I told him I'm a columnist with the Daily Camera in Boulder, and he got so excited," said Sandrock.
Maybe excited was an understatement, as every word thereafter, was about the town and the story.
"He knew everything about it, everything," said Sandrock.
Karr recited many facts about Boulder, from landmarks to the location of the Daily Camera.
"I got the impression he had been in Boulder, then I thought he just saw the documentaries," said Sandrock.
Documentaries produced by CU Professor Michael Tracy, whom Sandrock knew, and someone Karr wanted to know.
After talking with Karr on several occasions that summer, Sandrock was no longer interested in the subject, but later agreed to put Karr in touch with Professor Tracy through e-mail.
"I got the impression he wanted to talk more, but I stopped the conversations when he got into how the girl died, I just was not interested in that," said Sandrock.
Sandrock said Karr never discussed having visited Colorado, and never got the impression that Karr was a murderer, only extremely consumed with JonBenet Ramsey and her death.
"That's the thing, he wasn't that different, just obsessive, even in Boulder you meet a lot of people that are obsessive," said Sandrock.
Places him in Europe
Here sure gets around, doesn't he?
How does a person with his sketchy employment history afford to jet all over the world like he apparently did?
He had to get out of the USA after he skiped bail in 2001.
"...apparently..."
Operative word, IMO.
I hope he spells it Hemingway in his book.
has anyone ever said how Karr had the money to travel all over the place on a substitute teachers pay?
I read through other resumes posted at job4teacher.com and saw a common thread...that candidates skip from job to job after a year.
I also read a sample contract and learned that the employers commonly supply living quarters in addition to salary and reimburse the hired teacher for his travel expenses after 3 months on the job. The employed teacher is responsible for paying his phone bill and supplying his food. So, this is how Karr and others like him (?) travel from country to country.
That, too.
Very interesting......But how would he get the money to go from GA/Al to CO. How expensive would an airline ticket and car rental be in 1996?
Wow! A FReeper posted several days ago that he/she had been in Paris and had haunted a little bookshop called Shakespeare & Co. and met John Mark Karr also!
We have too many threads now and I don't remember who it was. I've looked back a little and can't find the post - wanted to ping the FReeper (assuming it's not this guy, lol) to see this. Hoping he/she will notice it.
Amazing! This guy got around and made quite an impression. He told the FReeper about the nanny job in either the Netherlands or Germany, I can't recall which - I know the one he told the FReeper about was not the most immediate one on his resume - I felt he left that one out on purpose in telling this person.
Wish I could find it and also wondering what year the FReeper said it was - if it was 2002 - but I'm working on other Karr stuff, which I said I wouldn't. Just want to try to find out about the invisible means of support.
I think they found his finger prints in the house were Jon Benet was killed. The fact that he had never been in any trouble with the law at the time of Jon Bene's murder would mean there were no FBI finger print file on him in 1996. It wasn't until 2001 that he got in trouble with the law. By then they were not likely checking finger prints with the FBI. After 4 or 5 years they would give up finding a match.
This DA ia a sharp cookie.. She would not have Karr brought back to the USA if she did not have compelling evidence of his guilt. We know it is not DNA, and it is not his confession... then that leaves finger prints.
Bolder = Boulder
His exwife told the media she knew he was with her on December 26, 1996. But since then she has recanted. And his brother told the media that he would offer proof that John Karr was home on December 26, 1996. He said he would offer absolute proof by last Friday. He has yet to do so.
We could tell from her presser just how sharp she was..../s/
The nice things about fingerprints or palm print....You can fax them and KNOW whether you're on the right track.
