A self-described peace activist responsible for the diversion of a London-to-Washington flight Wednesday acted bizarrely for hours, made references to al Qaeda and hijack training flights, and was restrained by two passengers after she urinated in the aisle.
Catherine C. Mayo, 59, a Vermont woman who also lives part time in Pakistan, was charged yesterday in federal court with interfering with a flight crew.
United Flight 923 was forced to make an emergency landing at Boston's Logan International Airport under escort by two military jets.
"She's got some very serious mental health problems," said Page Kelley, Mrs. Mayo's attorney, who described her client as "just barely lucid."
According to an affidavit and passenger accounts, Mrs. Mayo began pacing the plane from the front to aft lavatory and asked a flight attendant, "Is this a training flight for United Flight 93?" -- the flight hijacked on September 11, 2001, that crashed into a Pennsylvania farm field.
Mrs. Mayo demanded to speak with an air marshal, saying the contents of her bag would be of interest. Her bag contained a screwdriver, body lotion, several cigarette lighters and a bottle of water. The affidavit did not say how she smuggled the items on board, despite being screened twice at London's Heathrow Airport.
When confronted by the captain, Mrs. Mayo made a reference to bomb assembly, saying, "There are six steps to building some unspecified thing."
"She made reference to being with people associated with two words," the affidavit said. "She stated that she could not say what the two words were because the last time that she had said the two words she had been kicked off a flight in the United Arab Emirates."

In one of her columns, Mayo talks about the Muslim prayer rug in her hotel room in Pakistan, and about the compass she uses to find the direction toward Mecca. So she's some kind of Muslim.
I'll bet she's also on a trust fund. Vermont is full of such people.

The "part time resident of Pakistan" status should give pause for thought, though...
She's got a track record. She went to Pakistan to meet her fiance (whom she "met" online around 9/11/01) in 2003. He could not get a visa to come here. She lived in Pakistan for several years, apparently, seeking in her words the "full muslim experience". She published numerous anti-American articles in the Pakistani press during that time, including a sympathetic "letter" to the prisoners at Gitmo. She might be crazy, but she's consistently crazy. She didn't just suddenly go nuts on this flight. It's part of a large consistent behavior pattern.

I second your opinion. It doesn't read like a diversion. This woman is demented. And her liberalism is part and parcel of her madness.
Back in the 13th Century they would have ascribed her behaviour to demonic possession. Hmm, beginning to think those 13C guys knew a thing or two.

Why did the Captain open the cockpit door when there was a disturbance on the aircraft? Lock the door, send the aircraft into a negative-G dive, then back into positive-G's. Sure, nutgirl's urine is spraying all over the cabin, but she's not going to be doing anything dangerous for a while.
Excellent and important point! She pulls a stunt in the back of the cabin, cockpit door opens, real bad guys in row 1 storm the cockpit, game over. Captain needs to rely on assessment of head stew, order the restraining of the pasenger, divert the aircraft, and have copilot get the gun ready, never, ever opening the door until safe on the ground with SWAT on board.
Ultimately, we are ALL responsible for our actions, regardless of mental state (real or perceived).
This woman is as responsible for her actions as anyone you've met as you went through your day at work.
I'm afraid she might be overqualified.
This woman had to be using a MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCE.
Consider yourself blasted. This was a planned protest.
