Don't take this as "being blasted" but in all seriousness... I beg to differ with "...and not responsible for her actions..."

Ultimately, we are ALL responsible for our actions, regardless of mental state (real or perceived).

This woman is as responsible for her actions as anyone you've met as you went through your day at work.

You point is a good and proper one and one that would be accepted by the American right wing thinker Szasz, whom I respect.

I would have a lot os sympathy for your view actually and I would agree that I mat have gone too far on that phrase - I was trying to counter the 'she is entirely to blame because she is a liberal' view of some FReepers,

what if the shoe were on the other foot and a mentally ill conservative did something equally bizarre?

I am thinkWng of writing a short article on FR to outline some of the issues involved. what worries me is not people who think like you (a solid conservative response) but those who's views are in accord with Soviet Russia.
