U.S. men, women still worlds apart

Vive la difference: Despite feminists, metrosexuals and gender-neutral language, we just can't surrender those old ways. Men, it seems, are still chivalrous, protective of their womenfolk and perhaps endearingly stubborn about certain things. And women? They like to shop, they're fastidious, and yes, they will ask for directions.

"American men and women tend to embrace many well-known sexual stereotypes, admitting to patterns of behavior commonly attributed to their gender," according to a poll released yesterday by the Scripps Survey Research Center at Ohio University.

"Recall that male passengers on the Titanic agreed to give up their places on the lifeboats for women and children," the researchers said in framing their question to more than 1,000 Americans. "If there were a similar life-or-death situation today, do you think men should be expected to die and allow women to live?"

Almost two thirds of the men -- a manly 63 percent -- said they should be expected to lay down their lives. Only 39 percent of the women agreed; 43 percent of the ladies, in fact, thought the idea was "old-fashioned," compared with 23 percent of the men.

Females had a practical edge: While almost half the men said that someone had told them that they were reluctant to ask for directions, the number was just 13 percent among women. And 65 percent of the guys had run out of gas while driving, compared with 47 percent of their feminine counterparts.

I hate to admit it, but whenever I see a couple and the woman is driving, I find myself inevitably making judgements about their relationship, who wears pants, etc. I don't mean to.

I'll tell ya, I'm getting too old for this "my car is my image" stuff. Heck, I'd drive a car shaped like a "marital aid" with a picture of Gloria Steinham painted on the side, if that car got 35-40 mpg and had a good reliability record. :)

Um, no, not when they're on the desk or table I'm working on, as they often are. Or, better yet, prominently displayed in the bathroom, as with some other clients.

It's not a moot point, but then again, she's not complaining about not being able to find a good male, as she's married.

Those who complain about not being able to find good men, well, you know what you have to do to remedy the problem. :D

Tell that to a military recruiter, Wth more males in our population than ever, and a smaller military in generations, we are having to recruit girls, and women, and men in their 40s, to replace the two generations of young males that will not serve.

The idea that single motherhood is not only NOT to be stigmatised, but celebrated, is a feminist idea. That idea has been implemented most completely in the inner cities. Inner city black men get a pretty good deal, black women are left trying to hold their communities together.

Go to an inner-city church. Count the men. On one hand. This says a lot.
