U.S. men, women still worlds apart
Washington Times ^ | August 18, 2006 | Jennifer Harper

Vive la difference: Despite feminists, metrosexuals and gender-neutral language, we just can't surrender those old ways. Men, it seems, are still chivalrous, protective of their womenfolk and perhaps endearingly stubborn about certain things. And women? They like to shop, they're fastidious, and yes, they will ask for directions.

"American men and women tend to embrace many well-known sexual stereotypes, admitting to patterns of behavior commonly attributed to their gender," according to a poll released yesterday by the Scripps Survey Research Center at Ohio University.

"Recall that male passengers on the Titanic agreed to give up their places on the lifeboats for women and children," the researchers said in framing their question to more than 1,000 Americans. "If there were a similar life-or-death situation today, do you think men should be expected to die and allow women to live?"

Almost two thirds of the men -- a manly 63 percent -- said they should be expected to lay down their lives. Only 39 percent of the women agreed; 43 percent of the ladies, in fact, thought the idea was "old-fashioned," compared with 23 percent of the men.

Females had a practical edge: While almost half the men said that someone had told them that they were reluctant to ask for directions, the number was just 13 percent among women. And 65 percent of the guys had run out of gas while driving, compared with 47 percent of their feminine counterparts.

By doing so, guess what? You support the feminazi columnists.

Got a wide enough brush there? I've never bought either one of the magazines you've mentioned. And there are far more blatant feminist influences in society than magazines.

But I guess I'm guilty in your eyes simply by virtue of being female.

You're right. You should remain single.

Eh, hubby lets me drive when we're in my car. In his defense, my car is a "girly" VW New Beetle, and hubby claims that no self-respecting straight male would be happy to be seen behind the wheel of one. ;-) I have a feeling he's right.

We take my car on longer trips because until recently he drove a "beater" and we needed to keep it running as long as possible. Now he has a newer vehicle and I'm more than willing to let HIM drive!

Growing up, my dad always drove when the family was going somewhere...it's sort of a "man" thing to be behind the wheel on family outings, I think.

>>Well, DUH. We never let a woman drive when we are in the truck. I am worried about the 35% that let a woman drive them around....<<

I hate to admit it, but whenever I see a couple and the woman is driving, I find myself inevitably making judgements about their relationship, who wears pants, etc. I don't mean to. I'm just baaaaad.

Somebody keeps buying rags like Cosmo and Glamour. I see conservative women doing it all the time.

Really?

So you can tell if a woman is conservative just by looking at her?

So then please describe what a conservative woman "looks like"?

Hey, now - depends on the ladies in question.

I mean, what straight male wouldn't throw Hillary!, Janet Reno, Michelle Cervantes, or any of the Code Pink crew overboard at the slightest provocation?

I make housecalls to female clients who are *very* conservative. And in about 80% of those homes, there's a Cosmo, Glamour, Ms. or similar rag around the house.

They have to be buying them; else how would the magazines be there?

ROFL!!!

I'm glad I waited ... took a few lumps on the way, but learned to look beyond mere 'hotness'.

Mrs. Bustard is, of course, the most beautiful woman in the world; more so today than the day she walked down the aisle in that lovely white dress ...

Finding a good wife involves a lot more than just drunkenly drooling over T&A. All that is gold does not glitter.

You asked. A conservative woman:

Couldn't resist.

I love these threads. They're amusing.

You're close. The reason isn't psychological, it physiological. The whole "Men are visual, women are dialog-driven". Also, there have been studies that have shown, even before mapquest, men dealt with directions (North, south, etc) and women dealt with landmarks.

When men give directions, they say "Go east on Main for 4 miles, turn south on Maple, go 2 miles, it's on the left",

Whereas women will say "Go down Main, you'll see an Exxon Station, if you see the Methodist Church, you've gone too far; Turn at right when you see the BP station, drive down Maple, past the elementary school. It'll be on the left, next to the ice cream shop."

We're wired that way.

Funny thing is, now that we've bought a gps, my wife and I are both happy. I get map based navigation (and don't have to stop to ask for directions), and my wife gets someone to talk to her. :)

The map is still useful after you blow a turn, get thrown off by traffice, get snarled by road construction, need to stop somewhere along the way ...

Once you're off route, the printed directions are darn near useless.

Because we engage in conversation while I'm working at their place, and it becomes easy to tell what someone's politics are after an extended conversation.

For example, I'm pretty sure that a woman who is complaining that Bush isn't doing enough on illegal immigration, wants us to nuke Iran now, thinks Gov. Perry is too liberal, wants lower taxes, wishes the GOP would learn what "fiscal conservative" means, voted Republican in at least the last four elections (because a more conservative party could not be found - in their words), has a W: Still The President sticker on her SUV, and reads (but not posts to) FR (Hi, Steph!) is conservative, not so?

That is EXACTLY the way I see it as well. And a map HAS saved me from just that sort of stuff.

You have a FEELING he's right??? Sweetie, your husband is DEAD ON correct! Let me put it this way, no self respecting male would drive a vehicle that has a flower vase attached to the dash! You married a good man.

Maybe you should post a photo and let us be the judge of whether you should post it again. No need for a head in the photo, if you are concerned.
