The gay community in the western world, mauled by the first wave of the AIDS pandemic, now faces a second storm, according to a forecast released at the International AIDS conference.
Since 2001, new cases of HIV in the homosexual population in the United States, Europe, Canada and Australasia have been rising by about 1.9 percent per year, the research by the University of Pittsburgh said.
Without action to correct this trend -- a return to safe sex or an unexpected medical breakthrough -- the infection rate is set to soar as the population ages.
In 2001, HIV affected on average roughly one in 12 gay 20-year-olds in these countries. By the time they are 30, researchers projected, the rate could rise to one in four. And by the time this group reaches 60, 58 percent could be infected.
Ensuing generations are also at threat, said the study, which was a review of papers in published journals.
"Ongoing incidence rates at this level will yield very high HIV prevalence rates within each generation of gay men," University of Pittsburgh researcher Ron Stall said.
Stall was especially alarmed by the explosion in HIV infections among African-American gays.
In this group, the rate of new infections today is four percent among those between 15 and 22 years of age -- but 15 percent among those aged 23-29.
Assuming an average rate of increase of four percent of new infections per year, three-quarters of individuals in the 23-29 group will be HIV-positive when they reach the age of 50.
"It's not a new story, it has been repeated time and again in the literature in the past... an almost unbelievable incidence rate," Stall said.
"African-American men who have sex with men suffer among the highest HIV prevalence rates of any risk group in the world."
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) also warned of a daunting rise in the rate of gays contracting HIV in 35 US states.
Ronald Valdiserri, deputy director of the CDC's National Center for HIV, said the surge in infections among gay men could partly be explained by the growing use of methamphetamines, a drug that enhances sexual appetites and can drive users into risky sex.
He also pointed to what he called "AIDS burnout" -- complacency about the risks from AIDS in the era of antiretroviral drugs, which keep HIV to a manageable level but are not a cure and carry major side-effects.
"We have a new generation of gay men who didn't go through the early years, who didn't see neighbourhoods dying," said Valdiserri.
"HIV is still an incurable disease. In the United States five percent (of the budget for HIV) is spent on prevention," he added.
"America is more interested on treating this disease than preventing it. We can't treat our way out of this epidemic, even as a rich country."
If one had a silver bullet cure for AIDS, no drug company would put it on the market.

Earlier this week, the naalcp's commandante julian bond declared that AIDS is a 'black disease.'
I guess this is the gay community re-asserting their agenda that AIDS is a 'gay disease.'
Either way, I'm sure the blacks and gays will 'join together' in condemming President Bush for causing all these 'poor, oppressed victims' get AIDS.
The ones I feel for are the people that contract HIV and AIDS by no fault of their own. They're the only ones that can truly call themselves 'victims.'
I believe these figures. They are getting very bold in their public behavior particularly at my health club (which I just quit). They caught two fellows sodomizing in the executive club steam room last month.
Worst part about it is they withheld the info and didn't notify anybody so we had to find out about from the other members when we walked in the next day. So the club put us at risk in an infected area of heat and moisture. They put a 5000 watt search light or something in there with a large window, but not sure if they sterilized the place. I don't care anyways as I wasn't going to believe the club or take the chance anyways and inhale anything alive and floating in the steam.

In the beginning days of the epidemic, men would die within a few years - now they'll reach 60... There was a time when giving all the HIV positive men Social Security disability made sense -- was a time...
They regenerate by indoctrinating young children, and recruiting in schools. AND by molestation and rape of children.
Yep, and those "consequences"? They get free drugs and social security disability payments for 50 to 60 years.

It is probably the HRC and GLSEN trying to counter the current backlash against the homsoexual invasion of marraige.
They need rampant death to argue they should have intestate laws for their recreational sex partners.
As it stands now, when a homosexual dies without a will their immediate family (brothers sisters mother father) inherit.
This will increase the anecdotal "horror stories" of family who did not know excluding the recreational sex partners.

The disease is only about 25 years old - so I agree with you - my comment was a projection into the future. This virus appears to be much less virulent than it was in 1981, and as you can see from the article we're posting to, there's an assumption HIV positive people will "reach 60"...
That is an excellent point. Homos are certainly not "gay." We are letting the PC libs define away Noah Webster's meanings for words. The homos are trying their darnest to redefine the word "marriage" too along with a myriad other definitions of traditional vocabulary words. We shouldn't let them get away with it. Our children are the ones who will truly suffer the misuse of words.
