We ask all Republicans politicians to help the Connecticut Republican candidate win the senate seat up for election on November 7, 2008.
We ask you to do this by:
1. Convincing Republican nominee Alan Schlesinger, who has proven to be a weak candidate, to drop out of the race.
2. Replacing Alan Schlesinger with a strong Republican candidate.
3. Accepting the fact that Republicans, like popular Governor Jodi Rell, can win in Connecticut.
4. Stopping all verbal and financial support of Independent Democrat Joe Lieberman, who has pledged to caucus with the Democrats and continue to vote with them on most issues.
5. Endorse the Republican nominee, and work to get him or her elected.
If Republicans continue to surrender this seat to Lieberman, it sends a bad message to America: if liberal senators vote with us on one or two issues, we will let them be re-elected without a fight.
While Alan Schlesinger is legitimate Republican with a conservative record, his election has been mired in scandal. With polls showing his support below 10%, it is clear that he will not win the election. If Schlesinger were to drop out of the race, he could be replaced with a great Republican candidate.
The American Conservative Union gave Lieberman a 7% rating in 2003, a 0% rating in 2004 and an 8% in 2005. Lieberman has already promised to caucus with Democrats and maintain his liberal voting record. There is no reason for Republicans to aid his election in any way.
John Kerry only won this state by a 10% margin in 2004. With Lieberman and Lamont splitting the liberal vote, this is a great opportunity for Republicans to add a seat to their senate majority.
In the 2004 Connecticut Senate race, Republican Jack Orchulli took a third of the vote against popular Democratic incumbent Chris Dodd. Orchulli would easily be able to maintain those votes in 2006, already making him competitive in a three way race.
If the Republican party was united behind a strong candidate like Orchulli, he could win the seat, add to the Republican senate majority and carry out a respectable voting record for conservatives nationwide. The re-election of Joe Lieberman won't do any of that.
I drive through there with some frequency. It still looks pretty "comfortable" to me,if ya catch my drift.
During the few minutes that it takes to drive through on the Merritt Parkway,I see more Ferraris than I see in five years around the suburbs of Boston.
If Joe has indeed pledged to caucus with Democrats if he wins as an independent, then by all means CT Republicans should definitely remove Mr. Screw Up and work to elect a Republican candidate.
So far as I can tell, there will be no turnover of a seat if Lieberman stays, and with the exception of national defense, no change in how that Senator would vote, whether it be Whiny Lefty Dude or Dad From Alf.
Let's face it, it is a win for us no matter what happens. If Dad From Alf wins, the left wing blogger nutjobs go into a rage. If Whiny Lefty Dude wins, it drags the Democratic Party even further into the black hole and pretty much kills their chance of ever winning back Congress or the White House (until the next Bill Clinton comes along).
But I would not vote for Lieberman, even if he and Lamont are close. I don't care whether the Dems are leftist or moonbat leftist, they are still leftists, and I don't vote for them. I consider the vote tantamount to an endorsement, and the winner in Connecticut can rightly say, "I got 55 percent of the vote, so I represent the will of my state". If the winner gets 44 percent in a split election, he gets the seat but not that argument. And not my vote, if he's a Dem, and will vote for Harry Reid as Majority Leader.
I do when allot of the democratic caucus is turning on Joe, and now there is talk of pulling him from committees and trying to take senority away if he wins in Nov. Not many men are above forgetting things like that without holding ill feelings. I think Joe will not forget or forgive and neither would I.
Put down the hookah and meet reality.
Lieberman will caucus with the Dems in order to get decent committee assignments. They will cozy up with him in order to have an additional vote in the Senate, particularly if the majority is tenuous either way. He will be just as liberal as before, moreso if the Dems get the majority.
The Whiff of Trollism is in the air.
Lieberman has definitely stated he will caucus with the Democrats. One of the few things I will give him credit for, is that he has stuck to his word about this race and his support of the War on Terror. Other than that, he sucks.
Ned?
If if this particular GOP candidate were backed to the hilt, he couldn't win this particular race. We'd just throw it to Lamont.
You obviously didn't get the playbook.
We want Lamont and Lieberman to bash each other between now and November. We want money normally spent by liberals in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Minnesota and Washington to go to Connecticut.
We want the democrats as divided as possible. For as long as possible.
So sit back and get the popcorn ready.
That is a good point, divided they fall. But I still think Republicans should at least endorse Schlesinger if nothing else. Why get tainted by Dem stink?
No, but it's too bad they won't even consider it. Of course, a 'strong Republican candidate' in Connecticut can mean something completely different than it means in, say, Kansas.
The 'RATS are talking about taking away some of his committee assignments and seniority if he wins the seat.
ok
I'm not a politician, I live in Ohio, and we have our own problems with unworthy republican senate candidates here.
perhaps the local comments board would make more sense for you?
Of course not! It's Dean's brother.
