An abortion clinic has been banned from conducting abortions and the center's license has been suspended because it did not have a backup physician as required by the state, health officials announced Tuesday.
The Alabama Department of Public Health issued an emergency suspension order against Reproductive Health Services on Monday, saying it failed to have its regular doctor backed up by a physician with admitting privileges at a local hospital. The department said that "constitutes a danger to public health and welfare."
Health officials are still reviewing records from the clinic's Aug. 2 inspection and a complete Statement of Deficiencies will be given to the clinic within a week, said Rick Harris, director of the department's Bureau of Health Provider Standards.
"We identified a lot of other problems, there were other issues," Harris said Tuesday. "We cannot have an abortion clinic doing procedures without a backup physician, so it wouldn't matter if they had other problems. This one problem is enough to shut them down at least until they get this problem fixed."
Monday's suspension came exactly two months after the Summit Medical Center in Birmingham was permanently closed when it surrendered its license on June 14. The health department had suspended Summit's operations on May 17 after an investigation found numerous violations, including abortions being performed without a doctor's presence.
The closings of Summit and Reproductive Health leaves Alabama with eight abortion clinics, including one other clinic in Montgomery.
Phone messages left at the Reproductive Health Services clinic were not immediately returned Tuesday.
Harris announced last week that Alabama's rules for abortion clinics would be revised after health officials decided they aren't clear enough. He said then the proposed rule amendments should be ready in about 45 days.

There were a lot of vehicles park in front today when I drove by ... I doubt they were having a chat session. The place is right behind several restaurants! I've always thought that to be a sick irony.
Woo Hoo!
Regulate the *Daylights* out of it.
Remember, it's all for the children.
(Yes, it is. Think about it.)
Cheers!
The main problem with abortion mills is that they perform abortions. ALL abortion mills are a menace to public health and safety!
A local TV station in Dallas once called something like a hundred abortion provicers and had a 'client' pretend to be a minor, impregnated by an adult. None of them informed the police that statutory rape took place as required by law, 95% of them told the girl to bring in any adult and they would accept their permission even if its not the real parents.
Abortion clinics are not too law-abiding
like they care if the license was suspended
Yep. Regulate 'em into oblivion--and release the oil refiners and drillers. But the American people demand "death, enslavement, and the pursuit of misery," according to the Democratic Simplified Translation of the Declaration of Independence.
"like they care if the license was suspended"
Even if their license is suspended and they are shut down for a while, they will probably still perform the abortions somehow... That's how sick they are.
Their ad in the Montgomery phone directory features a pretty red flower and a butterfly on the petals! Another one in Montgomery also has a flower featured. Actually, there are more than two abortion 'facilities' in Montgomery, its just that they dole out abortion pills rather than perform surgical abortions. But they advertise abortion for up to 18 weeks ... RU486 purveyors. The one being closed temporarily advertises 'up to 24 weeks' but you can bet they wouldn't turn away a paying customer seeking a kill for an unborn older than 24 weeks. There is a sort of notoriety here in Montgomery ...
