Off-hand remark by senator causes flap

RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- A volunteer of Indian descent working for Democrat Jim Webb's U.S. Senate campaign said Monday he felt insulted when Sen. George Allen called him a name that sounded like "Macaca" during a rally in western Virginia.

S.R. Sidarth, 20, spent last week following Allen's "listening tour" and filming the appearances for the Webb campaign, which distributed a video clip of Friday's appearance to reporters.

"This fellow over here with the yellow shirt -- Macaca or whatever his name is -- he's with my opponent," Allen said. "He's following us around everywhere."

Macaca is a term associated with a species of monkeys.

"This is not something we knew," said Allen campaign spokesman Dick Wadhams.

The name also could be spelled Makaka, which is a city in South Africa.

Above the fold in the Wash. Post this morning!

&&
Wow! It is so earthshaking that, of course, it has to be in such a prominent position.

Maybe Webb's campaign staff is just a bunch of loathsome race-baiting leftists aided and abetted by an equally loathsome race-baiting lamestream media.

Excellent synopsis!

When will the Washington Compost say something, anything about Sen. Byrd's "white-n" comment?

Allen: "I'm sorry I said my opponent's staffer's name was Macaca. With things the way they are in the lamestream media, one slip-up like that and--bam!--bogus charges of racism stick to you like a tar baby. And from now on I won't be niggardly in my praise of my opponent's military record. He's a fine man. I saw him at a picnic just the other day . . . ."

Or night clerk at a motel for the ubiquitous Mr. Patel...

And, prior to signing on with the Webb campaign, S.R. Sidarth's first job was pumping gas in St. Louis for M. Gandhi.

The Webb campaign had the guy's picture on their site last night.

But they say it's not a "mohawk" it's a "mullet."

You can't make this stuff up.

"I am deeply regretful that this volunteer thought he heard something potentially racist in nature. I instead meant to call him a "dipsh*t", which is definitely not a monkey or city in South Africa."

S.R. Sidarth (Though some referred to him as "Mohawk" apparently.)

Thanks for that. I skimmed and missed the S.R.Sidarth somehow.

I'd never heard the word macaca before, but it appears to be English. It seems like a huge stretch to me. Is there some historical context where "whites" call indians monkeys?

If I believe television and books (since I don't know first hand), then it seems to me that indians have often named themselves after animals of all sorts and not all of the choices are what we would have considered flattering.

Sounds like desperation.

It's also the sound made by a proud young child that's just been toidy-trained.

Absolutely laughable. Anyway, this guy was singled out because he was spying for the other side.

LOL. He could have called him caca and it wouldn't have bothered me at all.

It was a stupid thing for Allen to say, and it have his opponents political ammunition.

It was the Macaca thing combined with "Welcome to Virginia, Welcome to America" when the kid was born and raised in Virginia.
