Terror police target 70 'plots'
Uk Telegraph ^ | Aug. 13, 2006 | John Steele, Toby Helm and David Derbyshire

More than 70 anti-terrorist investigations involving over 100 suspected Islamic extremists are under way in Britain in an operation unmatched even at the height of the IRA's mainland campaign.

John Reid, the Home Secretary, confirmed yesterday that police and security services were aware of about 24 "major conspiracies".

They are believed to be "multi-handed" terrorist plots, such as the alleged plan to blow up transatlantic airliners that led to the arrest of 24 people last Thursday.

Sources say that, on top of the inquiries confirmed by Mr Reid, up to 50 more are being conducted by anti-terrorist police, most of them involving Scotland Yard and MI5.

A significant amount of the activity involves internet communication between groups, often young Muslim men at college or university.

Then get them out of the colleges and universities!

In fact, get them out of England entirely. Then there will be no more threat.

Short of doing that, the Brits can only hope they get very lucky and prevent each and every one of these apocalyptic plots from succeeding. And even if they do, there will be many more young Muslim men (and some women) ready and willing to step forward to plot new attacks.

It will never stop, as long as Muslims are allowed to live in Britain.

What this demonstrates that the terrorists are continuing to target us and it's part luck and part excellent intelligence work that kept us from having another attack. All that AND the important tools, such as NSA intercepts, tracking of monetary transactions and other activities that help us foil the attacks.

Ah yes, those "important tools". The ones that the political party of "live, laugh and love often; and lie when convenient" have been whining about?

I think they keep them under surveillance for a while to determine who their contacts are, find the leaders, so they can roll up a larger group. It's very tricky to make sure they don't lose them, and to keep finding the additional links in the chain.

Indeed, like the "experts" say, we have to be perfect, the bad guys only have to be lucky every once in a while.

And so, of course, the UK and US have *downgraded* their terror alerts.

When are people going to realize that these alerts are for the nanny ninny nervous nellies. Sheesh.

The naivete is unbelievable.

Melanie Phillips 'Londonistan' - great read, quite shocking and supports your view. US edition has a better cover!

The Shah of Iran was trying to do just that, bring them into the 20th century, but Jimmy Carter wouldn't let him -- with the result of the Ayatollah taking over Iran, starting the resurgence of radical Islam.

How the hell did Carter get involved in this? What did he do? Is there a story or an article I can read?

My dream car is a Shelby Cobra replica as I don't have a 6 figure disposable income. I'd rather the earlier 289 version with a small block, more nimble than the 427.
That said, Carter is the root of this problem; there is history, and don't drink the cool aid; he was the worst President ever. Why Jimmah didn't like the Shah? Did you know that I/Nation had a "grand malaise" back then?? How about 20-22% bank interest rates,...etc. Story, do a little reading, and be careful in the snake. If you ever have it in Baton Rouge you better give me a ride!!!

We need to stop every foreign student with any link to the middle east and quit being so damn politically correct!

But, don't you see, if the Muslim 'students' don't come here to study, then more American students would get the desirable admission slots, and, and, probably, tuition costs would go down due to lack of demand and, and, . . . Sorry, I can't find a downside. Tried.

From the terrorist handbook: Once an operation has started, there is to be no communication.
