Republicans take liking to Lieberman candidacy
Washington Times ^ | 14 August 2006 | Donald Lambro

Posted on 08/13/2006 6:06:14 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

Democrat Joe Lieberman is picking up endorsements from Republicans across the country, while the National Republican Senatorial Committee appears to be dismissing its own candidate in Connecticut's Senate race.

Mr. Lieberman is running for a fourth Senate term in the general election as an independent after losing his party's nomination to Ned Lamont in last week's primary. The two will face Alan Schlesinger, the former Republican mayor of Derby, in the general election.

Mr. Lieberman is being supported by several Republican Senate candidates -- including Rep. Mark Kennedy, who is seeking an open Democratic seat in Minnesota and Safeco insurance executive Mike McGavick, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell in Washington state. He also received an endorsement from New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a Republican who is weighing a possible independent campaign for the presidency.

But in a rare departure from party tradition, the NRSC, whose chairwoman is North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole, said Friday that it wasn't going to waste its limited resources on Mr. Schlesinger's nearly hopeless campaign.

"Let me get back to you on that," NRSC spokesman Dan Ronayne said, when asked whether the party was going to vigorously support its own candidate.

Minutes later, Mr. Ronayne responded by e-mail with this statement: "Connecticut doesn't appear to be a competitive campaign for our nominee right now, so we are focusing our attention elsewhere on races where we may have a greater impact."

Joe should know a bit about the road to Damascus...

He could do worse than jump on his donkey, make a full conversion to conservatism and join the GOP.

What are the chances???

He'll always be a liberal independent but at least he's honest about it unlike the far left who call themselves "centrists".

"Let me get back to you on that,"...

I like that response. I'm curious to see how well Mr. Lieberman will do as an Independent.

Not very good. Lieberman voted for that horrific amnesty bill and when you look at it in its entirety, no Republican except extreme RINOs could support it. Voting for it implied corruption, hatred of this country, mental illness, or treason. I could not vote for anyone who supported that bill.

Right now the RNC cares about the number game and having one less Dem in the Senate is pretty good press, a Conservative Joe? Not gonna happen though.

Not for me, not after the 2000 election.

The endorsement should be, "He's liberal as Hell, but at least he's sane." or perhaps, "If we have to have a Democrat, make it an American."

But, but, but... Joe Lieberman is NOT any sort of a conservative!!! I like they guy, I'll send him my $50, and I think he had some moral compass before he ran with Gore, but he ain't no conservative.

I'd MUCH rather watch two Demonrats eviscerate each other than see another Northeastern RINO. Pass the popcorn!

If I was in his state I would vote for him for two reasons. The republican has virtually no chance of winning and Lamont is the other option.

You are correcto. Except for certain foreign policy issues he is a Liberal (note the capital L), including issues such as homosexual marriage (sic) and spending programs.

It's beginning to look like the Conn. senate race between Lamont and Lieberman will turn into something like the WWI battle of Verdun--a bloody black hole into which each side pours massive resources only to see them destroyed. I'm rooting for Lieberman and hope that's exactly what happens.

What are the chances???

Look out your window. If you see a herd of pigs flying over your house (in formation), then I'd say the chances of old Joe going conservative are pretty good.

How about some opinions here. It seems to me that Joe can run as an independent, but that he could still be a Democrat once elected. IOW, runs as independent but takes office and says hey, I'm a Democrat.

What makes anyone believe that he would stay officially an "independent" once elected? And, in most regards, there is very little difference as an independent when he will still vote the party line 90% of the time. Granted, the DIMs can't count him as a DIM in the numbers game for Senate majority rule. But outside of that, I don't see any real pluses for the right. Just the pleasure of a little humiliation for the Democrats. Which feels good, but doesn't last long or change the world as we know it.

Smart. Spend money where it yields results.

I think this is a great opportunity for Republicans nationwide. I don't think endorsing Lieberman is the right answer. This is basicly the message I'd like to see from our side (or the President.)

Of course we support our candidate Alan Schlesinger as the best choice for Connecticut but I will say this; Although he opposed a lot of things we we've tried to do domesticly, I like Joe Lieberman. Lieberman tried to bridge the gap on some difficult issues between Democrats and Republicans and I think it's a shame that the Democratic Party has basicly kicked the guy out for trying to do that. I mean everyone is saying they want a better Washington where both parties work together to solve problems and one of the guys who tried to do that is fighting for his political life because of it. I think the Democratic Party has taken a lot of steps to NOT work with us on a lot of important issues and this is a drastic example of that. I really hope this is not a trend that continues in the Democratic Party or the in-fighting is going to get worse.
