Why the U.S. Has Not Stemmed HIV

Activists Blame Infection Rate, Unchanged Since 1990, on Policies and Funding

The number of people in poor countries taking AIDS drugs -- about 1.4 million -- rises by tens of thousands every week. The spread of AIDS in Africa seems to have peaked. Three countries there -- Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe -- report declining HIV prevalence, largely thanks to changes in people's behavior. Even in India, considered AIDS's ticking time bomb, efforts to defuse the epidemic are paying off in some places.

Amid these optimistic trends from around the world, however, is another statistic that is stuck in time, right here at home.

The number of new HIV infections in the United States has been about 40,000 a year for the past decade and a half. It has not budged -- not with new drugs, new prevention strategies or new administrations. Five years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an effort to cut it in half. It did not move.

The intransigence of the AIDS epidemic in the place where it emerged -- and where many of the strategies against it have been developed -- will be on the minds of many this week as 20,000 people gather in Toronto for the 16th International AIDS Conference.

There is little question that, for public health experts and AIDS activists, the fact that the HIV infection rate has not changed since 1990 is an embarrassment. At the same time, it is a testament to a victory -- albeit one that happened long ago.

AIDS was first recognized in June 1981. Incidence of the disease -- the number of new cases in a period, generally a year -- peaked at 160,000 in the mid-1980s. With intensive effort to reduce risky behavior in gay men and, to a lesser extent...

I have a very simple answer: STOP THE BEHAVIOR!!!

"The number of new HIV infections in the US has been about 40,000 per year for the past decade and a half."Back in the 90's the msm predicted that AIDS would kill hundreds of thousands(possibly millions)in the US alone. The truth?AIDS is the direct result of unprotected homosexual sex with infected partners and/or sharing needles with addicts who are also infected with the virus. The rate of infection has remained stable because AIDS for the most part is confined to these two groups.More money and more programs are not the anwser.Face it-some people simply don't care or are just ignorant.

Three countries there ...report declining HIV prevalence, largely thanks to changes in people's behavior.

The writer answers his own question: "changes in people's behavior." Why not here? Because any time anyone suggests that unprotected and promiscuous homosexual sex is not a good idea, the gays scream about homophobia and their "civil rights."

Good News ! Time to use some RAT math...

1990 population of the US = 248.7 million
2000 population of the US = 281.4 million

# of AIDS cases remain steady @ 40k per year.

The rate went down.

Hmm ~ "reducing risky behavior in gay men" ~ isn't that what they do? ~ risky behavior?

This steady infection rate suggests that every year there are 40,000 new gay guys who get hit with it ~ odds are they are a substantial portion of all the new gay guys on the gay meat markets too.

So, let's say gay guys live 100 years. Then, over a century, there'd be 4,000,000 gay guys. At the same time there'd be 250,000,000 or so non-gay guys born (if non-gay guys only lived 76 years or so). That'd mean (4/250 = .016) or a maximum of 1.6% of the male population who ended up gay.

Of course, there are many fewer gay guys than I project, so they've gotta' be down less than 1%.

(I know somebody is going to argue that 100% of gay guys don't get aids ~ but how do you know unless you use a projection method that assumes the percentage of gay guys in the population is far greater than 1%.)

This number of gay guys also pretty well conforms to the best estimates of how many pedophiles there are who prey on young boys.

No doubt that's merely coincidental.

Isolation of infected individuals from the rest of society.

Quarantines are used only with the most contagious diseases.
HIV is not transmitted that easily.

Of course you might find it comforting that a few Muslim dictators and that monster Castro have tried quarantining people with HIV.....and even Castro finally realized it was a mistake and stopped the practice.

well let me think...

The entire concept of the disease itself is and has been politicized to a fare the well to the point that anything constructive that COULD BE done takes years.

It might just help if the media didn't glorify the lifestyle that spreads the disease and crucify anyone who dares to speak against the lifestyle.

...(and lack of funding no doubt)...

Later in the article:

"The CDC now spends $720 million a year on HIV prevention. It would need to spend $415 million more to reduce new cases by 50 percent, according to Holtgrave's calculations."

It's always about money.

AIDS is too lucrative. That's why it won't be cured. Someone smarter than me and 'in the know' said that.
Sounds appropriate.
