These ladies are packin' heat (More women shooting for safety and sport)
The Chicago Tribune ^ | August 10, 2006 | Courtney Linehan

When 18-year-old Sara Garbarz walks into a shooting range, she often gets mistaken for a spectator. When she begins to load her 12-gauge shotgun, she is sometimes taunted by men who don't expect to see a woman with a firearm.

"We live in a different world than we did prior to 9/11. Women went from being soccer moms to security moms," Varner said.

People who taunt a woman while she is loading a 12 guage may not be entirely bright.

Agreed, and even though I'm a guy, the people I meet at the range are always extremely polite and courteous.  I haven't encountered any 'taunting' or similar rude behavior such as what's being described.

I'm just the opposite.

I taunt people who don't own firearms (male and female - I don't discriminate).

I've never been to a firing range, and I find this "taunting" charge extremely hard to believe.

I've been in lots of firing ranges and I promise that a much more common reaction to a woman with a 12 gauge is to check for a wedding ring and then to try to find out if she has a boy friend.

I've never been to a firing range,

That's terrible!  This is something that we need to change   :-)

and I find this "taunting" charge extremely hard to believe.

Yes, and it also makes me wish that I hadn't used the "auto-excerpt" posting function.  It chose the one stupid line out of the whole article and everyone is fixating on that.

I hope that people will click on the link and read the article, because the rest of it is far better.

Women at firing ranges are a rare occurrance. Guys try to chat them up (when the range is cold, of course), not taunt them. The writer made the taunting bit up. Pure bunk.

I'm female and when I'm at a range, all I get from men is curious looks at most. There's no taunting involved. At all. Everyone is curtious and it's all business.

Woo Hoo!

(although you should put your flame-suit on for the folks who will harass you for the lack of eye and ear protection in the picture)

"Some people are very judgmental," said Garbarz, of Hanover Park. "They'll say things like, 'Oh, you're going to break a nail.' I get that in a lot of places where I don't know people."

Eighteen, single, female, and packing a 12-gauge at the range is not a recipe for being teased. It is a good way for a girl to get a date though. I don't believe that any GUY ever said "Oh, you're going to break a nail" to her at the range. I can believe that one of her GIRL friends may have said that to her to try to discourage her from going in the first place, though.

The guys would be trying to chat her up. Been there, done that.

I've been to a firing range several times and more often than not, I'm the only female. Never encountered any taunting from the guys. They are always helpful and courteous. I find the taunting story tough to swallow myself.

I think that the taunting thing is from her female friends, and the writer intentionally left that part out. I just cannot believe that guys at the range would behave like that. I have put many a round down range, and have never seen anybody behave like that. When everybody is armed, people are polite, especially toward women.

Look closer. She's got foamies in her ears. (But thats just because we just got through shooting the .357 Mag a few seconds before.)

Our range master is fairly lenient.

More likely a little good natured kidding.

Sorry, didn't see that. And I wasn't meaning to fault you....I've just noticed a tendency for some folks to go out of their way to find fault with things here on FR "because they can" .
It's not a big deal for me, I promise you. :-)
