Brian Williams Refuses to Apologize for Comparing Army Rangers and Seals to Terrorists
Free Republic | August 13, 2006 | Westpole

Posted on 08/13/2006 11:34:57 AM PDT by Westpole

Brian Williams said in response to a question about muslims willing to die to kill us that we have "guys on our side like that too. They are called army rangers and navy seals." He claims he only meant that we have people willing to die too. And he says he hopes that clears it up. Not quite! Mr. Williams.

First no one has ever doubted Americans are willing to make any sacrifice for our country. Has he heard of D-Day or Iwo Jima or the Revolutionary War or just read today's papers for that matter. And its not just uniformed people how about the citizens on Flt 93 that gave up their lives trying to stop that plane from its intended target? Mr. Williams we are well aware our side has heros.

When you say we have guys like that "too", willing to "take" their lives you have compared us to them in the most direct way. As much as you praise our guys you equally praise theirs by saying "too". Your praise merely serves to sugarcoat the horrendous comparison. Some say you just misspoke. And parsing through your interview lets just say kindly that just about everything you said less than lucid. However you have in the past compared our founding fathers to terrorists and again last week you say "we have guys like that too".

Its pretty simple Mr. Williams either condemn their tactics or leave standing your sugarcoated praise of their bravery.

We have to keep their feet to the fire. We have to let them know what we approve of and what we don't. How? By not watching, listening to their programs or by not buying their papers or media in which their articles are published.

(Willaims) claims he only meant that we have people willing to die too.

Why stop at "Rangers and SEALs", Brian?

How about including George Washington and the Continental Army, just for kicks?

That GI saying "how about a nice cup of STFU?" would work nicely as well.

The stuff is about ready to hit the fan. Who do you want next to you in the foxhole?

1. a U.S. Navy SEAL.

2. An Army Ranger.

3. Brian Williams.

Case closed.

If Brian Willians is going to be next to you in a fox hole you had best be Hezbollah.

To use our heroes as an analogy comparing those murdering islamofascists is disgusting. That he doesn't get it is even worse, but IMO, he certainly does get it.

Brian Williams is a brainless, light weight idiot.
It's not his fault he can't think clearly.
He was just born that way.
Stopped listening to his program long ago.

Mr. Williams was speaking well of our side not dissing it. This whole epsiode just goes to show how people spin things into stupidity. I saw the show. I understood what he said. He has NO reason to apologise.

Brian Williams has yet to explain why his first thought to the question was to equate US soldiers to terrorists. I don't understand why he would make that kind of comparison unless he thinks there is a moral equivalency

Are you just dense? If the question was whether we had people as willing to die for their beliefs and/or country as the terrorists, who else would come to mind quicker? This is a mountain over a mole hill. Some people just dont have anything else to bitch about today. Have fun.

Hell, raise the possibility that terrorists were born as innocent little babies like us rather than sprouting forth fully grown from the mouth of the Devil and some will accuse you of moral equivalence. What a crock.

That is just it Dave...the question was not "do we have people willing to die"..The question was why would muslims exposed to western values still be willing to die in order to kill us. Williams reply..."we have guys like that too"

It sure is amazing how easily offended some of us are. I dont know if its because they are walking around with a chip on their shoulder because Conservative Utopia hasnt resulted from 12 years of Conservative Rule or if they are just stuck on stupid.

Somehow I think you must have heard that incorrectly.

From now on, just read the cue-cards, Ken-doll.

But, but, but.....don't you know? Brian is a highly repected journalist. Just because he babbles when you take away his cue cards and couldn't write a thousand word essay on anything relevant to anything without someone else holding his hand and guiding the pen.

This is a molehill.

I agree.

I think that we do our own position a disservice when we make a big deal about this kind of stuff. We need to distinguish between out and out fabrication and sloppy journalism ala Dan Rather.

There are people willing to die for the cause on BOTH sides. That is a statement of fact. The difference is that one side dies to save the innocent, the other side dies to kill them. Thus the moral difference between us and them. Its possible that Williams was simply addressing the fact that dying for a cause is not, in and of itself, a bad thing. It's what cause you are dying for that determines who is moral/immoral.

If we expect our people to be understood in context, we need to do the same for those with whom we disagree.

That was the video here is the written transcript
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14303121/

MATTHEWS: You know, in our first edition of HARDBALL tonight, we had a senator on, former Senator John Edwards on, who said that once these people in the east and the Islamic world get to know us personally, understand our good character, as he said, they wouldn‘t hate us so much, they wouldn‘t want to commit suicide to hurt us. But here we have maybe 25, 24 people who have lived in London and England and the free world for all these years, that become citizens, subjects of the crown, and, yet, after having gotten to know us, they want to kill themselves to hurt us. Isn‘t that an even deeper conundrum here than the chemicals being used in these attacks?

WILLIAMS: And that, Chris, that last aspect, the willingness to take one‘s own life, I always tell people, you know, there are guys on our team like that, too. They‘re called Army Rangers and Navy Seals and the special forces folks and the first responders on 9/11 who went into those buildings knowing, by the way, they weren‘t going to come out. So we have players like that on our team.
