'A SPINELESS retard with the character of pond scum." A "whacko," "greedy un-American idiot," "fascist," "whining liberal" and "nasty little gun grabber."
Those are just some of the names I've been called since I published an Op-Ed article in the Washington Post to commemorate the fifth anniversary of my brother's death. After briefly stating that David and his fiancee were shot and killed by the fiancee's mother, who was angry that she had to move out of their L.A. apartment, I went on to argue for a national ban on handguns. The gun control lobby, led by the Brady Campaign, has worked passionately to make guns safer and to regulate their sales. But such measures, I contended, will never significantly reduce the annual U.S. death toll by firearms 12,000 because most murderers use legally purchased handguns and know how to operate them safely.
A couple of days later, while procrastinating on a writing assignment, I Googled my article. And so began my strange, weeklong trip through chat rooms on such pro-gun websites as keepandbeararms.com freerepublic.com, packing.org and rightnation.us.

"Another vindictive person, who wants to punish every gun owner for the actions of a single individual"
By her logic we should use an instance of a citizen defending his life with a handgun to demand laws requiring gun ownership.
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

It's worse than weasel-worded. If the flon bought the gun, then it was an illegal purchase. If someone else bought the gun for the felon, it was an illegal straw-man purchase. If the gun was purchased legally, and then stolen by the felon, the purchase history is irrelevant.
Ms. Price lied - PERIOD. If not lying, she is betraying an incredible lack of intelligence.
Yes, but how do you distinguish her from Hitlery?
Maybe, still no 'David Price'

Family Dispute Involving Elderly Woman Culminates in Three Deaths
LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE

"Family Dispute Involving Elderly Woman Culminates in Three Deaths"
San Pedro - On Saturday, November 4, 2000, at 9:25 a.m., Harbor Area uniformed police officers responded to a "Shots Fired" call in the 1000 block of West 23rd Street. The initial investigation by responding officers revealed that an elderly woman, who resided in an apartment at the location, had armed herself with a gun and shot another person inside. When all efforts to establish contact with the armed suspect failed, a Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) was notified to respond to the barricaded suspect incident.
SWAT officers entered the apartment and found the bodies of 70-year-old Carmen Foy, her daughter, Annette Metoyer, 43 years of age, and her boyfriend, described only as a 42 year-old male Caucasian. Further investigation revealed that Mrs. Foy armed herself during a family dispute involving her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend and that she shot them both before turning the gun on herself.
The murder weapon was recovered at scene. Harbor Operations Support Division Detectives are conducting the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident should call Harbor Homicide Detectives at 310-548-7621.
This press release was prepared by Officer Eduardo Funes, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.

Good Morning Jenny,
I happened to be reading Free Republic this morning and came across your article. In reading the ensuing discussion, I saw a link to your earlier piece and the Free Republic thread on *that*.
First things first--and most important. My condolonces on your loss. Do you have any news on the disposition of your (ex?)-mother in law? Has there been a trial, or a plea bargain? Other "reporter" type questions come to mind, such as "How do you feel about her?" -- but those are manifestly NONE of my business.
Second--I find it odd that you call Free Republic a hate-filled, paranoiac site ("But the paranoia and bone-chilling hatred that spew from such sites as packing.org and freerepublic.com make for an equally and unusually effective argument for a ban on handguns.") There is a LOT more to Free Republic than just the thread you had read; and it is not primarily a gun-related site. And as for the email you received from the medical doctor who turned out to be Plutarch under his real name--he's a medical doctor. That argues against the assertion of your friend that "these are just guys who sit in front of their computers at 3 a.m. in their underwear." Remember, if you are arguing for clear thinking and against stereotyping, it is a good idea to refrain from stereotyping on your own behalf, no matter how great the temptation.
Speaking of which, I noted from one of the threads that you have a Ph.D. I find from Google that there is a Jenny Price listed as persuing a PhD in Art History in UCLA; and another mention of a Jenny Price who did graduate work in Yale in environmental history--may I assume that those are both you, even though "Price" is a common surname? (My own doctorate is in molecular collision theory.)
One last question for you, from an unorthodox perspective. You had mentioned that your own mother in law had passed the background check, and the safety check, and yet *still* committed murder. May I ask, what it is you expect the government to *do*, more than this, to keep guns out of the hands of unstable people? Is your frustration that the system failed to protect those you love, behind your wish to ban handguns? The reason I ask, is this. Recall (slight change of subject) how in the aftermath of the July subway bombings in Britain, authorities in New York sought to search backpacks and other belongings of those attempting to use the subways? Civil llibertarians had a *cow* over the invasion of privacy and possible constitutional violations. Why is it that you seem to have no similar concerns -- and apparently, are arguing FOR -- an even more egregious violation of an explicit constitutional right?
And if you wish to echo the view of many that the 2nd Amendment is merely a *collective* right for state purposes, could you please quote passages from the founding fathers, or jurisprudence from the late 1700's up to mid 1800's (the earliest days of the Republic) which support this view?
Again, my condolences on your loss. I wish you the grace to heal and recover all that you can of your life.
Best Regards,
beautiful women + guns = rapid heart beat. :-)
I'm not.
All killed throughout history? I'd say his numbers are far too low.
But "Ghengis (Alexander was a wuss!)" surmised that David and I had different fathers because that was so "common in California in the '60s."
What was in the thread and my response
Plutarch's comment: Well, I've been looking. I haven't been able to find an obituary on the death of the 33 year old David Price above. David Price was born in 1968, Jennifer Price, according to this article in the Princeton Alumni magazine, was 38 in 1999, and thus likely born in 1961. The seven years difference is somewhat distant for siblings but certainly plausible.
My response: With the difference in their ages, possibly David and Jennifer were the products of two different marriages. With two different fathers.
That was more common in California in the '60s than in most other places.
Seven years difference in age, different last names of siblings and believed to have grown up in California (a state that glamorized divorces for the rest of the nation in the '60s). Seemed like a reasonable thought to me.
I find it very telling that, in one of her more innocuous Free Republic quotes (mine), she is still unable to to accurately convey what was stated.
In speaking to the possibility of a fractured family explaining different last names,
I said:
That was more common in California in the '60s than in most other places.
She said:
But "Ghengis (Alexander was a wuss!)" surmised that David and I had different fathers because that was so "common in California in the '60s."
She did properly place a portion of my comments in quotes, but her insertion of "so" instead of how I phrased the sentence changes the meaning significantly.
I would expect a "Research Scholar" to be more likely to use statistics rather than twist the meaning of other's words and changing the context. Unless of course she is speaking purely with emotion and promoting an agenda. An agenda that can not be supported without inserting emotion over facts, citing the ability to use statistics that she does not use and changing the meaning of other's words when arguing her point.
And don't even get me started on the cynicism towards her original story. Not after so many fabricated "news" items and photos of the last several years.
I strive to be accurate, as opposed to the L.A. Times and their ilk.
Jenny is suffering from "Cindy Sheehan disease" with an onslaught of "Jersey girl sickness".In my not professional opinion, she's dancing on her brother's grave for political gain and having outbursts of righteous indignation that her motives could be questioned.
The cure prescribed would be to have her abandon all political works since her motives are flawed. In short, she should seek a real job such as factory work in the food, clothing or shelter industry.
"...I can tell you why the right to carry a 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun with a 10-shot clip is not guaranteed by the 2nd amendment."
The Constitution and the writings of the Founders say you're wrong, Jenny. Documentation posted here.
Gun Facts Bump
And so began my strange, weeklong trip through chat rooms on such pro-gun websites as keepandbeararms.com freerepublic.com, packing.org and rightnation.us.
This reminds me of my college days. We were required to go to a specific number of "cultural events" as part of our requirement for graduation. One such event was a female speaker who had been the "victim" of a date rape. I put the word victim in quotations because the rape had occurred five years previously, and she was up there at the lectern railing against men in general, with a very accusatory tone. The longer I sat there, the madder I got. I didn't rape her, but she was making me out to be a rapist by default, simply because I was a man. I noticed when I was getting my master's degree at another university, she was speaking at that institution as well. Basically, she has exploited her "rape" for money. Essentially, she's a prostitute.
$100,000 reward for any gun that will load itself, lift up off the table by itself, aim, and pull it's own trigger.
Jenny is to be pitied for her pain and immature response to events in her life.
I understand the pain associated with loss, as I have lost 5 friends to murder. On the other hand, I have known 3 murderers, two of whom (a paranoid common law couple who killed a policeman) got the injection in Alabama. The other, a racist predator named Joseph Gardner, is waiting for his in South Carolina.
The point of all of this is that unarmed, we are incapable of stopping animals who would take our lives. I have been up close and personal to the craziness and understand that the only safety a person has is that provided by the ability to possess and employ superior firepower. The world has always been thus, and thus will always be, regardless of heartfelt pleadings by the Ostritch Class.
