US involved in planning Israel operations -- The New Yorker
Lebanon offensive prelude to strike on Iran
NEW YORK -- The US government was closely involved in the planning of Israel's military operations against Islamic militant group Hezbollah even before the July 12 kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers, The New Yorker magazine reported in its latest issue.
The kidnapping triggered a month-long Israeli operation in South Lebanon that is expected to come to an end on Monday.
But Pulitzer Prize-winning US journalist Seymour Hersh writes that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were convinced that a successful Israeli bombing campaign against Hezbollah could ease Israel's security concerns and also serve as a prelude to a potential US preemptive attack to destroy Iran's nuclear installations.
Citing an unnamed Middle East expert with knowledge of the current thinking of the Israeli and US governments, Israel had devised a plan for attacking Hezbollah -- and shared it with Bush administration officials -- well before the July 12 kidnappings.
The expert added that the White House had several reasons for supporting a bombing campaign, the report said.
If there was to be a military option against Iran, it had to get rid of the weapons Hezbollah could use in a potential retaliation against Israel, Hersh writes.

By all appearances, he's a damned liberal, and liberals don't care one whit about this country.
Or one of the voices in his head.
Hey, I've got a story for him. It looks like both Hezbollah and the Iraqi insurgents are bogged down in their fight against Israel and the Iraqi and US forces. It's a real quagmire for them. They don't seem to have any exit strategy. Their losses mount day by day. We haven't been allowed to see the funerals of the Hezbollah fighters, yadayadayada.
thanks for posting that pic - but is it just me or does it look like light beams are shooting out of his a$$ as he stands at that podium?
You can guess what I think comes out of his mouth...
Even if I didn't already know the reputation of this man, anyone who wins the Pulititzer Prize is suspect. That prize is simply a mechanism for liberal-left journalists to pat each other on the back.
The New Yorker is similarly completely partisan. Recall that they ran an article a few years ago attempting to exonerate the Rosenbergs. They never ran a retraction when the Venona files and other evidence from Soviet records became avialble, showing conclusively that the Rosenbergs were guilty. All through the Vietnam War, The New Yorker ran stories attacking US soldiers for atrocities, most of which were reported from biassed sources, or were fabricated.
And Hersch can go fly a kite, he's a hatemongering troublemaker.
"I'm pretty sure you don't have the war plan" - Rummy.
Hey Sy, how did that Iran invasion we did a year ago working out?
Well that is completely dishonest spin. He claimed Bush was planning a nuclear strike against Iran. He did not claim it was a military contingency plan. He said Bush WAS going to nuke Iran.
But Sy Hersh is also a "Major League A__hole - Big Time".
Hersh is pathetic. He wishes to sabotage US power. But I hope he is right. The president, however, must make the case for an invasion of Iran. Air attacks alone cannot be relied upon. It must be assumed that when Iran has nuclear weapons, it will use them. It is no different from letting Osama have nukes.
USAF will advise as needed, thak you.
This is an opinion piece dressed up as a news item.
Uh, yeah, like 30 years ago.
Hersh is a self-hating Jew and a terror apologist.
