Americans will die for liberty
As we took off from London for New York a few days ago, our three over-excited children asked if there was any chance of the plane being blown up. I explained that the likelihood of that happening was virtually zero, and wondered how we were going to maintain some semblance of order during the flight. One did not wish the sedate American passengers by whom we were surrounded to form the impression that British parents are unable or unwilling to impart the rudiments of good manners.

Only about half of us. The other half will enjoy the fruits of liberty, but demonize those who died.
Bump for a breath of fresh air.
One small quibble.
The idea has somehow gained currency in Britain that America is an essentially peaceful nation. Quite how this notion took root, I do not know.
Because we are. Don't confuse being good at war with not being peaceful.
We are peaceful but we are not pacifists. The two are not the same thing.
Without freedom ... there is no life
he might really be wondering why we never aspired to create an 'American Empire' and draw equally asenine political borders as their "empire" did
Why try to rule some foreign land for a little bit of tribute when you can sell hamburgers to them and make a fortune?
I think he was intending "peaceful" in the sense that the Europeans understand that word.
I hope more Americans live up to his appraisal.
What a moving piece.
God bless the Brits - the ones who think like this - like REAL Britons who are very similar to us. Like the sailors who fought the Armada, invaded France with Henry IV (?) and Edward I and III, fought under Alfred the Great, and in the Great War and withstood the blitz.
We have those too. They whinge about their patriotism being challenged. They want the US to be more like Europe, in the same way some Britons want the UK to be more like continental Europe, as if being liked by the French is a worthy goal.
I read this sitting in Gatwick Airport yesterday. The feeling from the British is enough is enough. There was real outrage at this 5th column among average Brits I talked to regardless of their politics.
The guy in Montana who wrote this in the comments section touched me in a way that not many do.
We are tolerant towards all but the intolerant. We are convinced we are, as I tell my children, "on the side of good." I'm not so sure those who are so critical of Americans without some introspection towards their own flaws are really somewhat jealous of the obvious strengths of the American character. Flawed we may be, but to err when attempting to do the right thing is more desirable than appeasing the 'bad guys" out of fear of confrontation.

...The wars of wine & wool. Edward I and III were still very Norman. Henry Bolingbroke (IV), less so, though much of the nobility who fought with him held titles in England & "France".
Generations of Europeans couldn't figure out how to get along with each other. If a fresh wind hadn't blown across the Atlantic from the west, they very well might be still at each other's throats. Funny that many of them now see us as the threat.
Very, very true. I wish no man harm, just don't f*** with me or my family or you may have a short discussion with my 12 gauge!
bttt
Bump
And only that half that fights for some kind of liberty that doesn't include the right to property. Kelo v. New london.
I only bring it up because there was a story in Friday's Washington Post about an 98 year old self made millionairess property developer.
There was one line that caught my eye. She was tying to "accumulate" properties to get enough contiguous property to make it commercial. There was one property owner who wouldn't sell. She had to offer him an amount of money that was irrestistable---to him.
She didn't try to use eminent domain to steal the land. She couldn't this was the '70s when we still had some liberty left. Now with all our property in jeopardy, one wonders.
So while you half are dying for liberty, remember kelo v. new london, remember WACO, Ruby Ridge, and don't be so distracted by your fight with islamofascists that you forget we have our own fascists, globalist, commies here in this country.
Oh, and one more thing. Close the stinking borders before we let any more of our enemies into the country.
We are peace loving but we loathe, reject, and will fight to the death the forced cowering peace purchased by threat of the tyrant.
When I served in Strategic Air Command, where every B-52 carried more destructive force than all the bombs dropped in World War II, the motto "Peace is Our Profession" was emblazoned everywhere at our base: from the sign at the front gate to the bottom of our official stationery. Eurocynics found the notion laughable and absurd. We Americans who served in SAC ignored the scorn and the laughter and went about our business keeping the US and Western Europe safe and prosperous for fifty years and helping to undermine and destroy the vile Soviet empire in the process.
Our might and demonstrated willingness to use it to counter forces of genuine evil allowed effete Euroweenies the peace and space of time to pretend they were superior to us.
All honest and fair-minded Europeans might well ask themselves: without the leadership and stalwart sacrifice of the United States and its armed forces, where would Europe be today?
