Crist worries conservatives
Tribune ^ | 11 August 2006 | Joe Follick

TALLAHASSEE -- Republican Tom Gallagher is betting his political life on an appeal to Christian and social conservatives. And at least one of his supporters in those groups say their own future is at stake in Gallagher's quest to be governor.

Gallagher has earned the endorsement of Florida Right to Life, as well as vocal support of most social conservative leaders in the state. His goal: Win the hearts of Republicans most likely to get out and vote on Sept. 5.

I'm not overly excited about it either, but I will definitely be voting for Crist over Gallagher. I posted this on another thread, but I don't know if anyone saw it, because no one responded. Maybe another Gallagher supporter can assuage my doubts about his character. If all this is true, then he's a scumbag and shouldn't be running.

1. The ethics charges which are currently pending against him, with the punishment (censure/fine/impeachment) likely to be given prior to the election.
2. Supporting the sales tax on services (an additional 6% added to all services performed in the state).
3. Supporting the additional 1 cent sales tax for prisons, raising the sales tax to 7% statewide.
4. Supporting AWB, bullet registration, and a ban on gun ownership if you're under 21.
5. Flip flopping (just like Kerry) on abortion, parental consent, vouchers, and tort reform.
6. Repeated (and well documented) cheating on his wife.
7. Admitted drug use while he was a state legislator.
8. Day trading stocks while on public time. And trading stocks of companies that were doing business with the state, at a time he was VOTING on the actual business they had with the state.
9. Using state employees to manage his real estate properties.
10. He's down over 20 points in the polls and was HUGELY outraised by Crist and BOTH Democrats during last reporting period. For whatever reason, his funds have dried up. In fact he only raised $225 in new money last week. That's pathetic!
11. Running negative attack ads (the first Republican to do so) against Jeb Bush in his prior run for Governor. Jeb responded by saying "Gallagher makes Lawton Chiles look conservative" with all of his proposed tax increases.

Are we expected to overlook all of these liberal positions and character flaws and chalk them up to past mistakes?

I'm voting for Crist as well, but not too excited about it. I don't think he's really that conservative.

I don't prefer him either, but if I'd easily vote for him over any Democrat, thats for sure. Thats how the game works..

New poll out today shows Crist with a 24 point lead over Gallagher. He's already lost his #1 strategist and fundraiser, and he IS NOT making any grounds in the polls. He should drop out.

As long as Gallagher can wave Schiavo's bloody shirt, I suppose so.

Is the purpose of this blurb by the Tribune to make Gallagher look like a wholly-owned subsidiary of the dreaded Religious Right, the fire-breathing radicals?

Govan ran against Judge Greer on Greer's handling of the Schiavo case during the height of all the hype and he lost with Greer getting almost 70% of the vote. At the same time polls throughout Florida showed strong disapproval of the government's trying to butt into business that the majority(68%)of Floridians considered a private family matter.

On a national basis, you can track the Presidents slide in the polls from the same period. The Schiavo government interference cost the G.O.P. dearly. It weakened Tom Delay and allowed the vultures to get to him...remember how powerfull he was before he stepped into it with his Schiavo declarations. The religous right wing of the G.O.P. doesn't have nearly the numbers to derail Crist.

So you are willing to give him a pass on his liberal social policy?

There are a lot of Floridians who have higher priorities for the government to deal with then who is sleeping with who or stopping medical research on stem cells...flag burning ect., and a myriad other issues that are near and dear to the religious right. People are rightly turned off by sanctimony when it comes from politicians. If the Church can't get the job of implanting social norms in society done, then I hardly expect Government to be able to. At least not without going all Taliban on us. People are hesitant to give power to anyone who might resemble a religious zealot. Gallagher hasn't even lived much of his life as a religious man so all we have of substance on him is his past...and the words that he is using now...all talk.

Jeb Bush has endorced Crist. That's good enough for me.

You forgot to add the Democratic Party to Gallagher's list of endorsements. They need badly for him to be the nominee...other wise all the stuff they have dug up on hime will go to waste.

we have of substance on him is his past

The Democrats have already done their opposition research on Gallagher and are ready to unload if the gets the nomination.

He has a huge trail that puts hum in the same category with Bill Clinton and Gary Condit.

Hr's been doing a lot of hustling, trying to clean up hus image, but all that baggage has been uncovered by the Dems.

There are a lot of naive people who will play right into their hands and even though they choose overlook all his negatives (denial), regular voters will be shocked.

Gallagher's own fault.

What happens in Coconut Grove does not always stay in Coconut Grove. His dalliances don't really bother me as much as his trash talking of Jeb Bush in their run off years ago.

Govan ran against Judge Greer on Greer's handling of the Schiavo case...

No, he didn't. People who were aware of Judge Greer's malfeasance through other means may have voted for Govan, but Govan was forbidden from mentioning it himself. Indeed, campaign rules for judges forbid Govan or Greer from really saying much of anything in their campaigns, though that didn't stop Greer from cheating. If only one candidate in a race is allowed to campaign, should it be a surprise if that candidate wins?

Something bothers me about Crist. Always has. I felt it too when he got the AG position.

I just hope that if he gets in the one area he will be conservative in is the state Supreme Court. We need to get those Democrat hacks out of there.

(Crist) He came to our firm to drum up support, and most of his talk was him bragging about all the liberal things he's done as AG--all the businesses he's sued, etc.
I guess you could assume that he was simply playing to the audience, but it still worries me.

He revealed that he's really a RINO & you'll still vote for him?

Dear God....Florida is indeed lost!

Excellent record? LOL

Jeb is handling all the law enforcement wrongful death investigations for Crist. Crist is the king or queen of coverups.

Florida needs to clean house and Crist isn't the answer. He's part of the problem. Crist is in the AARP and they've already infiltrated the FLAG Dept. That's the real Charlie Crist. If you're not a special interest, you're nobody to Charlie Crist.

Crist was a total failure as FLAG with an "l" and violated his oath of office. Crist could be impeached based upon his acts as Fla AG.

Bill Nelson was the Dept. of Insurance in 1996 when the problems began. Gallagher was DOI back after Hurricane Andrew and Tom Gallagher FIXED the insurance crisis but Bill Nelson put his own touch on it in 1996 and don't blame Gallagher. BILL NELSON took Florida out of the national risk pool for insurance. That was the death knell for Florida homeowners and business owners. (no problem for Crist he only owns the clothes off his back. He doesn't own real property. His dad handles his finances? What is he? Beaver Cleaver with an allowance?

If somebody's on the ball, THEY DO OWN REAL PROPERTY. The Clintons were renters/freeloaders for a very long time.
