Report: Boston Targeted In Terror Plot
Yahoo News ^ | August 11,2006

Boston may have been one of the targets in the alleged plot to blow up airplanes headed to the United States from Great Britain, according to published reports NewsCenter 5's Steve Lacey reported Friday that information out of London Friday is in sharp contradiction to what Gov. Mitt Romney said Thursday about the plot.

Several British newspapers are quoting U.S. officials saying the planes targeted by the terrorists were headed to New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston.

British authorities said that the plan was to blow up planes in mid-flight using explosives smuggled in hand luggage. The newspapers reported the bombs were to detonate not over the Atlantic Ocean -- but over the cities while the planes were landing, causing even more casualties on the ground. Despite these reports, the governor is standing by his assertion that the Hub was not at risk.

Sorry, no one is going to get me to believe that the target was the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when they could wait until near cities and then damage them.

Starting Sept 12 I assumed that would be the next attack, if it was planes again.

I hope they've reinstated the rule about not leaving your seat for 30 minutes before and after takeoff at Reagan.

I disagree, I have always thought that Bin Laden motives were not religious, but motivated by other factors. Bin Laden is or was the puppeteer or rabid fundamentalist moslems.

Depends on the wind. Many times, the incoming flights go directly over my house in Malden.

"Report: Boston Targeted In Terror Plot"

No suprise that.
Hardcore Islamists do target places that even some Westerners consider
"decadent".
Like the Taliban ending the practice of warlords taking young male "protoges"
in Kandahar, I guess these terrorist-to-be in England wanted to blast
the ground-zero capital of gay marriage.

Listening to Boston sports radio, a reporter flying out of Logan to Atlanta for the Pats-Falcons game tonight said the airport is practically dead. He didn't know if it was normal or not, but he was surprised at how few people were flying out of Logan today.

The attack on the Pentagon, a large office building filled with people resulted in 125 dead and 80 injured (exclusive of the passengers and crew on the plane).

That plane was aerodynamically clean and in one piece and being controlled when it hit at a "Flying" Airspeed.

Spinning pieces of junk are not.

Spinning pieces of junk slow down their spin and reach terminal velocity. Something like an engine might have a pretty high termnal velocity, but the body and interior fittings are going to be moving slower than your typical drunken teenager on Friday evenings out in the family car.

No need for terrorism, Mass will destroy itself eventually.

To Washington National the approaches are over water

Flew into Reagan National Airport hundreds of times. Many of those times, I thought the wing tip would hit one of those buildings along the Potomac by the Watergate.

If a bomb were to be detonated during final descent, those planes could wipe out about a mile of condos, hotels and commercial buildings.

Remember, they said they wanted to destroy the WTC. And they did, even though nobody would have said they could. All they had to do was to get lucky, which they could do again.

And I still don't understand why you are attempting to minimize the amount of damage they could do. Does that make their behavior better in some way? The fact remains that they want to kill as many people as possible. Even if they wanted to kill just one (such as Theo Van Gogh), that's not a happy thought. But they really do want to kill as many of us as possible, and maybe while you might feel more secure by scoffing at their destructive capabilities, the fact is, they want to do it. And they might well get away with it, particularly if more people have your dismissive attitude.

I'm not making moral judgments on their behavior in these posts; I'm simply arguing that they are quite stupid.

You've forgotten the Air Egypt suicide event where the middle of the Atlantic was the target.

I dont believe so ,but thats your opinion. It would take a massive explosion to scatter the pieces that far. much more than that provided in the bottom of a soda bottle of explosives. I believe the best bet for the terrorists was high in the sky while the plane was pressurised. The small amount they had might bring the plane down there. I believe that an explosion with the limited amount of explosives available to the crazed bombers would leave the plane mostly intact although too damaged to continue flying.

Just my opinion.

Slipping something into a bottle of Gatorade is another.

The first time I flew after 9/11, I had a bottle of water with me. The screener had me open it and take a drink from it. That would be bad news for someone with part of an 'explosive cocktail' in their drink wouldn't it?

Folks complain about Logan a lot, but once you find your way to the terminal for the airline you need, it's not that bad.

The last couple of times I flew, I got to the security checkpoint 1/2 hr. before my flight, and got right through. Of course, I tend to fly out vey early in the morning, so that likely makes a big difference. I'm expecting to have to get there at least an hour and a half before my next flight, just to give myself plenty of time, and because we'll have several bags since I'm flying with our daughter down to college for the first time.

I read last night that they were using sports beverage bottles with a false bottom. The liquid explosive was to be in the bottom separated from the actual drink but dyed to match the color. So if they had to drink from their bottle they would be safe.

Sad that the NYTs saw fit not to interview anyone who saw a missile heading for it.

I was watching the news reports immediately after Flight 800 blew up. The news folks interviewed people all over the area who saw the plane, and NOT ONE of the people spoken to mentioned any sort of missle heading for the plane. In fact, most didn't even notice the explosion as it happened. They noticed it after the sound reached them, and they looked around to find the source of the sound. Most mentioned seeing pieces of the plane falling into the water.

I wonder when the first mention of the missle occurred, and when other folks started saying they saw it?

Since everything has go through detectors, wouldn't the detector pick up an alteration in the sports bottle?

No. Most explosives detectors are specific for certain nitrogen componds given off by the usual explosives. The particular mixture these "people" use is never used in industrial or military explosives, and contains no nitrogen. The reason it is not used in common explosives is because it is unstable and unpredictable.

Only a moron with a death wish would attempt to make or use it.

On another thread it was mentioned that they were going to use a false bottom in the container. I'm sure if you opened a can of Red Bull or something, you could pretty easily put a little for drinking up top, and comparment the explosives below.
