Washington - US Muslim groups criticised US President George W Bush on Thursday for calling a foiled plot to blow up airplanes part of a "war with Islamic fascists," saying the term could inflame anti-Muslim tensions.
US officials have said the plot, thwarted by Britain, to blow up several aircraft over the Atlantic bore many of the hallmarks of al-Qaeda.
"We believe this is an ill-advised term and we believe that it is counterproductive to associate Islam or Muslims with fascism," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group.
Restraint
"We ought to take advantage of these incidents to make sure that we do not start a religious war against Islam and Muslims," he told a news conference in Washington.
"We urge him (Bush) and we urge other public officials to restrain themselves."
Awad said US officials should take the lead from their British counterparts who steered clear of using what he considered inflammatory terms when they announced the arrest of more than 20 suspects in the reported plot.
Hours after the news broke, Bush said it was "a stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation."
'Islamo-fascism'
Bush and other administration officials have used variations of the term "Islamo-fascism" on several occasions in the past to describe militant groups including al-Qaeda, its allies in Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Homeland security secretary Michael Chertoff told MSNBC television the phrase reflected what he called Osama bin Laden's own vision of leading a totalitarian empire under the guise of religion.
"It might may not be classic fascism as you had with Mussolini or Hitler. But it is a totalitarian, intolerant imperialism that has a vision that is totally at odds with Western society and our rules of law," Chertoff said.
prairie, I don't think *they* include American History in their studies or they might think twice about inflaming CHRISTIAN outrage. It's in our very character to be violent when the need arises. We just don't make beheading videos.
We certainly don't. Christians first response is to practice forgiveness and to spread the goodnews of Christ's love. We do not threaten to murder those who decline to believe.
Jesus never meant that we should allow ourselves to be annihilated.
Pardon the language on earlier post, btw. I was steamed.
And that's our bottom line. Not so with Islam - it is written in their "book" to either make slaves of "unbelievers" or kill them.
As for the language, :o) I've read enough of your posts to know those are not words you customarily throw around. This whining statement from CAIR is enough to incite a saint. CAIR should have been dismantled yesterday - nicely or not. I despise them for making me despise them. Make sense? :o)
Yep, makes sense.
Not as much as the plot to blow up airplanes already has.
The Muslim "community" has their work cut out for them in separating themselves from the Islamic Fascists. If I were them I get started doing that today.
They need to get the UN to write a strongly worded letter... cause that always works... {/sarcasm...
Nice idea for a bumper sticker...
**STOP JIHAD NOW**
*VOTE REPUBLICAN*
But it keeps getting lost in his silly "Religion Of Peace" rhetoric.
Classic fascists. Much better fashion sense and they looked cleaner.
Exaclty. Why can't we have an enemy that shaves?
Hello Corn, with everything that's going on at the moment, I figured you'd make an appearence! ;)
Maybe you need a map?
Watching the British Channel 4 News at lunch time today, the usually handwringing is start already from 'moderare' Muslims over the foiled terror plot - some things never change.
Yep. I'm lost man, truly lost. Point me in the right drection....
The word "Schmutzig" comes readily to mind
