Two of the men arrested on suspicion of being involved in a terror plot to blow up a series of transatlantic planes had converted to Islam, it emerged.

Ibrahim Savant, from Walthamstow, east London, changed his name from Oliver when he converted, according to neighbours.

The 25-year-old student, whose Muslim wife is reportedly pregnant, was arrested at his family home in Folkestone Road.

Another suspect, who was not named by police, converted to Islam just six months ago. He was arrested during a raid at a house in Hepplewhite Close, High Wycombe.

According to locals, the property belonged to a white man whose behaviour had altered when he took up the religion.

"He converted to Islam about six months ago and grew a full beard," an 18-year-old local resident, who asked not to be named, said.

"He used to smoke weed and drink a lot, but he is completely different now."

Castro's hero? Why? Falange was Nationalist, not Republican.

Believe or not, Castro's roots were in nationalism. He was very anti-communist.

Castro had a complicated relationship with the nationalist forces in Espana. On the death of Francisco Franco in 1976, Castro had the Cuban flag fly at half-mast for a week. Moreover, in his college days, Jose Antonio was Castro's hero.

We like to think in terms of left and right on a linear scale, and most of the time it that is the correct way in describing reality. However, in Georgie Anne Geyer's terrific book, " Guerrilla Prince" she points out that Castro was very much a "soldier of Espana." His father Angel was born in the same province of Espana, Galacia, as was Franco, and Angel had a profound effect on Castro. Angel was sent to Cuba to fight the "gringos" in the Spanish-American War. Angel never went back to Spain, but his hatred for the North American "Yankees" lasted a lifetime and I'm afraid Angel passed this hatred of America on to his progeny, and Fidel and Raul were especially affected.

I hope so. And I think probably so.

I was reading recently about how the Brits systematically and on numerous occasions got agents into the highest ranks of the IRA. If they can do that, we should be able to do this....

Toleration of incitement, however, is fundamentally misguided.
And by incitement, I assume you mean banning the Koran?

"He used to smoke weed and drink a lot, but he is completely different now."

He got religion.

The wrong one!

No, incitement is a behavior which society can properly regulate. Read/think whatever you want, but laws in civilized societies proscribe behavior, not thought.

A couple of hours ago I heard on Fox that one of the Heathrow terroris's' sister claims that he met with Galloway numerous times!

Galloway of course denies it, but I bet it's true, and boy would I love to see Galloway ARRESTED!

Did these young moderates "convert" by threat of violence to their families or were they willing participants?

That would be interesting to know.

Sadly true, but when sliding towards tyranny it's better to pull back rather than push forward.

"It's amazing the lengths people will go to to get rid of the burden of freedom, which makes them confront their lives and ask themselves some serious questions about their own responsibility for their condition."

The ol' Personal Responsibility thing. It's the foundation of a free society.

There's a lot of people on FR who consider themselves conservative but have a serious challenge with exactly what you described.

You are not kidding. Far from being the peaceful paradise of Islamic myth, a universal khalifa would be a dystopia of monumental proportions. Warfare and murder would be pandemic, as one faction after another declared themselves to be the only "true" form of Islam and declared jihad against all the others.
