"Only time will tell whether Olmert was a fool or a cunning Machiavellian strategist."

The time has come. Olmert is a fool.

I agree to some extent. This migt be a lot less solid than it seems.

Support for Israel would have been to continue to veto any UN resolution that didn't involve destroying Hezbollah in its entirety. Instead, the US agreed with France to a deal that is entirely unacceptable and hypocritical.

I don't doubt that Olmert is mostly to blame for the delay in the ground invasion, but that doesn't mean our government did its job either.

Oh, and as for "it is Israel's war, not ours", tell that to the hundreds of marines and other Americans killed at the hands of Hezbollah.

From another freeper:

Per Bolton, this seems a good move. Israel gets to stay in Lebanon until the UN force is in place, and the UN will have authority to fire back at Hezbollah (gasp!). Hez must stop all offensive acts. Look... we know they won't. As soon as Hez rockets fall again, Israel will already be in lebanon to hit back. In the meantime, Israel will have had time to run its logistics train up to the front line. Hez will have had no chance to rearm. When Hez starts shooting again, the war continues with Israel having had a breather. Israel is using maneuver warfare against terrorists who have only pre-dug bunkers. The cease-fire will also allow Israel to further target Hez weapons positions.

My view: On the political side, I expect Olmert to be tossed-out of his chair within the next two weeks and replaced by someone who has testicles. Olmert is an early warning system for the US. How would we like to have an American Olmert/Dem president?

I pray you're right. Because otherwise, well, it's unthinkable.

If that;s how you see it, which I disagree with somewhat, then Israel had already lost in 2000 when they pulled out completely and abandoned all of southern lebanon to Hezbollah. They lost another war in 2005 when they surrendered Gaza to Hamas. HB and Hamas were the clear victors then. That didn't spell disaster for Israel and I have a feeling that this won't either.

In any event, Israel's position vis a vis Hezbollah in Lebanon is stronger now than it was in August of 2000 and Hezbollah's relatively weaker.

I'd say thsi was more of a draw with nothing really achieved by either side.

Bush is incoherent if he helped push this.

More resolution [Rich Lowry]

Was just talking to a friend who was noting that there is intense anger toward Israel within the administration for botching the war. He thinks the attitude was, "What's the point of giving them more time when they do nothing with it?" He thinks it's the worst defeat for Israel since 1948. He also guesses that the reason that the French flipped against the first resolution wasn't so much the Lebanese reaction as the realization of how poorly Israel was faring militarily. His general rule when it comes to U.N. resolutions in the Middle East is that they either simply reflect the facts on the ground, or make the victor give away a little bit of his victory; they never let someone pull victory out of a hat from defeat. So Israel will utlimately get from this resoltuon what they won on the ground, which is to say not much.

Sounds to me that Bush is angry at the Isaeli's for botching the war. He got them all the time they needed and they tried to run a PC war.

Eric Shawn from the UN says that even if the resolution is agreed to by the Israeli cabinet...it would take 10 days for an "international and UN force" to get there...

So...I guess we could add 10 days to after Sunday as far as Israel being able to clear Lebanon of Hezbollah??
