U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in his first campaign appearance since launching his independent re-election campaign, likened terrorists to Nazis and called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to combat them.
"We are at war with a brutal enemy," said Lieberman during a campaign stop Thursday at a Waterbury pizza joint. "How the heck can we be in a battle in which we are fighting as Democrats and Republicans against each other when these terrorists certainly don't distinguish based on party affiliation? They want to kill any and all of us."
Lieberman lost by 10,000 votes in Connecticut's Democratic primary to millionaire businessman Ned Lamont, who ran on an anti-war platform. Although top state and national Democrats support Lamont in November's general election, Lieberman on Wednesday filed petitions to run as an independent candidate.
British authorities on Thursday arrested 21 people and said they thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage.
Word of the plot instantly raised security levels at airports across the country.
"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us - more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous that the Soviet Communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.
"I want to make sure that I satisfy my responsibilities and use my seniority in the Senate to make the future of the families of Connecticut safer than it would otherwise be. I don't think that Ned Lamont gets that and that's a serious difference between us.

Joe is correct.
Oh please spare me your rapier wit. Pfft!
CBart has grown very quiet since that was pointed out to him/her.
This is the same Joe Lieberman who voted against all the Bush tax cuts, against banning same-sex marriage, against banning partial-birth abortion, against the confirmation of Judge Alito, against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in favor of the Kyoto accords. Oh yes, this was also the same Joe Lieberman who was the Democrats' own vice presidential candidate six years ago.
Yes he 'gets it' with respect to the war. But it's only because his party is so pathetic that he stands out at all.
I believe he will win in the general. Does he then caucus with the back-stabbing Dems who sought to throw him out?
And for all the partisan "detractors" that have tried to attack Leiberman and discourage conservative/Republican support here because he's not a "republican" even though they'd support the likes of McCain, Chafee, Specter, Graham, and on...they know who they are....take this as a strong rebuke towards yourselves.
I don't give a damn about attempting to elect a weak kneed RINO that would never support our national security as Leiberman has done, nor do I give a damn about exercising vengence for 2000 nor does this conservative and AMERICAN care to allow anti-American appeasement scum to win the CT seat to use as an election symbol for partisan purposes as they use Dean. I want Democrats AND Republicans in office that won't bend to polling, the MSM and outside pressure to weaken our survival in this war.
I support Leiberman's re-election because it's the only right coarse for someone that takes the WOT seriously.
Care to argue with me over that? Go ahead. I'll be as dismissive towards you as I am to the 51% that elected Lamont. Partisanship over this issue makes absolutely squat to me. Infact, it only engenders this disgust from this corner.
Compares terrorists to nazis? Duh!
See my tagline. If only they were so benign.
All I know is I have a rash after dealing with him/her/it.
He said he would caucus with the Dems.
Like I said, Joe isn't a deep thinker.
We should treat Islam in the US the same way we treated the German American Bund before and during WWII.
I see a Conservative Popular Front in the making.
Joe is a clever, if usually mistaken, guy. He's obviously realized that he can't win amongst the Democrats, so he's trying to peel away some GOP votes. I predict he wins if he continues this rhetoric.
I think you flushed a troll out Jenny...
Joe has gotten the national security aspect of it for a long while, or have you been absent?
Yes, he's been there all along, concerning WOT but he votes as a liberal on all other issues. Oh well.
Amazing! And I was just minding my own business, when suddenly ...!
Right you are. And a fine example at that. One of the rare and few Dems who are admirable.
Integrity in the face of the utter devastation of the Dem party,he stands out as a very attractive American in our political scene. His example gives us reason to hope for a renaisance of political accord and civility of our two-party system.
America needs men of his maturity and stature to assume the mantle of leadership in the difficult times ahead of all of us.
All of this from an ultra-conservative Republican.
It must be difficult to run for office in a state where 50% of the people are certified kooks. They don't call it the nutmeg state for nothing.
Statement rejected.
This "rhetoric" has been Lieberman's position since Sept. 11, 2001. This isn't a put-on for political reasons.
If the Egyptian Eleven make it to LA will Special Order 40 be rescinded to allow LAPD to make an arrest?
