U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in his first campaign appearance since launching his independent re-election campaign, likened terrorists to Nazis and called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to combat them.
"We are at war with a brutal enemy," said Lieberman during a campaign stop Thursday at a Waterbury pizza joint. "How the heck can we be in a battle in which we are fighting as Democrats and Republicans against each other when these terrorists certainly don't distinguish based on party affiliation? They want to kill any and all of us."
Lieberman lost by 10,000 votes in Connecticut's Democratic primary to millionaire businessman Ned Lamont, who ran on an anti-war platform. Although top state and national Democrats support Lamont in November's general election, Lieberman on Wednesday filed petitions to run as an independent candidate.
British authorities on Thursday arrested 21 people and said they thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage.
Word of the plot instantly raised security levels at airports across the country.
"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us - more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous that the Soviet Communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.
"I want to make sure that I satisfy my responsibilities and use my seniority in the Senate to make the future of the families of Connecticut safer than it would otherwise be. I don't think that Ned Lamont gets that and that's a serious difference between us.

Wow-Joe hit the nail on the head.
In spite of all my issues against his voting record, Joe "GETS IT."
It's kind of hard to argue about left v. right if your heads are getting cut off.
Good for you, Joe. I'll bet his support grew exponentially overnight. Lamont is a joke.
Would someone tell Lieberman to cool his jets? Silence is golden here.
No one care what the former VP thinks...if he thinks at all.
"In spite of all my issues against his voting record, Joe "GETS IT.""
Which is exactly why he was in the crosshairs of the loony left. Dissent is only good and "patriotic" when it's against conservatives.
On this issue, if on no others, Lieberman does indeed get it.
He'll always be the sidekick half of "Sore Loserman 2000" to me, but he does understand what we're up against with Islam, at least partially. And he does strike me as a basically decent human being, albeit one with views I very much disagree with.

We are in a war for our very survival. Israel, Europe, the U.S., we are all in this together, whether we like it or not.
Europe and the leftists world-wide can determine to help, or they can practice subtrifuge and fall back on being rescued later.
We have confronted this type of situation before. Some of us learned something from the last go-round. Others will simply NEVER learn.
The former VP?
Tough talk is what's needed right now. Anf Joe's talking tough. Good on him.
So are the Democrats going to split over the war now or what?
Today is a harsh reminder that yes, Joe, terrorists want to kill us all. They're not going to ask if we're conservative or liberal before getting out the carving knives.
Politically, today's averted air bomb threat could not have been better timed for Joe.
Oh! Great. A man with no office or authority playing sidewalk supervisor. That impresses you.Huh?
They already are split.
Joe's on one side ... and all of the rest of them are on the other.
Joe's a U.S. Senator. Did you miss something along the line?
You sound just like a Lamont supporter.
That's good Joe. That's the way to stick it to this Lamont weinie. He couldn't find his way to the men's room when it comes to terrorism.
If Joe keeps it up, he will win by 75% of the vote. Lamont is a perfect example of a total dork. I wouldn't vote for him for dogcatcher. And I'm sorry to sullie the reputation of dogcatchers who earn an honest living.
Joe "gets it" FINALLY!
I think we've got a live one, here.
