Washington Whispers: GOP voters: like a rock
U.S. News ^ | August 9, 2006 | Paul Bedard

Many Democrats may hate the war in Iraq and itch to dump the president, but a new GOP survey shows that Republican base voters stand ready to jam the November polls to return their team to Congress. A three-page-survey memo obtained by Washington Whispers reveals that despite reports of some dissatisfaction with the economy, the war, and President Bush, 81 percent of Republican voters are "almost certain" to vote and an additional 14 percent say they are "very likely." It goes without saying that they'll vote Republican: By a margin of 84 percent to 6 percent, they will pull the GOP toggle switch in the voting booth. And here is something you don't hear very often: 88 percent of Republicans approve of how the prez is handling his job. What's it all mean? Analysts say that GOP voters are ready to dig in and play defense against the charges Democrats are tossing at Republican candidates.

The memo also helps to define what issues work for Republican candidates. The survey--officially tilted "Base Mobilization Survey Finds and Conclusions"--divided the issues into foreign and domestic. On the foreign side, it's all terrorism and war with polling that finds GOP voters back the war, worry about Democratic attacks on the fight against terrorism, and think the Patriot Act, moves to tighten the border, and even telephone surveillance are good things. And their favorite domestic issues aren't a surprise: They are pro-tax cuts, big on cultural values, and worried that Democrats want to put too much bureaucracy in healthcare. Another nonshocker: They don't like the media's war stories, thinking that they are too negative. Some 60 percent of the GOP base expresses "extremely high dissatisfaction" with the coverage of the war.

The worse it gets, the quicker Joe six-pack is going to wake up realize his country is being sold down the river.

As long as that six-pack is Old Milwaukee, you're probably right.

See my list of the current Democrat coalition. Having read Beeler's comments, I think he belongs with that group.

Thanks for your list, M2C. Most appreciated, and I agree with you.

Super conservatives, as you claim to be, are self reliant. Educate YOURSELF.

Can't go along with that beeler. That's the same mentality as the guy who commits sideways because his wife left him for another man. He sure showed her, didn't he?

But Ronald Reagan supported the 'latinization of America.'

Other than that, I agree. We need some one strong enough to shake up the way things are.

Like another President Bush.

But ... but ... the media said that Republicans aren't motivated for the November elections and the Democrats are all itching to vote. They couldn't have lied to me, could they?????

I agree, it's risky, and the democrats are worse on every issue.

And we've seen how quickly the Democrats can inflict their damage.

Look what the Clinton administration was able to destroy in those eight years. (I'm not gonna' go through the whole laundry list as we know it well).

I've thought this now for years. I don't forsee another 1998 (where GOP voters camped out) due to the seriousness of international issues facing the country.

"I'm a REAL conservative, and the Republican party has left people like me behind."

My dear departed grandmother, may she rest in peace, always said I should beware of anyone trying so hard to convince me they were a REAL somebody.

Obviously, any future election, if the dem party continues on the track they are on now.

I see, so much for the urgency.

The fact is, no matter how awful (and liberal) Republicans get, the main goal is to keep Democrats out of office. Fear sells. (to some)

Well stated! Bravo!

(And thanks for being involved at the grassroots level.......where it really counts. We conservatives need to keep making serious noise at the county level).

'true,only,real' conservatives

Code for 'those who shoot their own in the back'. I have a 'former friend' who would send article after article how Bush was evil, the GOP was evil, not conservative enough, blah, blah, blah. In many years, NOT ONE ARTICLE ABOUT OUR REAL ENEMIES, I.E. DEMONRATS, LEFTISTS, LIBERALS, NOT ONE!

When all of my real enemies are dead or neutered, then I'll start smacking around my 'friends' and colleagues'. Till then, my real enemies are going to get the whole magazine, again and again.

Republican border and immigration solutions may not be as draconian as many would like, but they sure as heck are a whole lot tougher...
hahaha...Oh wait, you're serious, let me laugh harder bwahahaha!

Finish the sentence or be branded a liar. You left out the entire context of my sentence: "...but they sure as heck are a whole lot tougher than what people like Ned Lamont and his newest hangers on, Jesse Jackson, Maxine Waters, and Al Sharpton would give us."

Are you seriously saying that people like Lamont, Jackson, Waters, Sharpton and their ilk would give us better immigration and border reform legislation?

Excellent example of what I'm talking about. Check out this piece: http://patriotpost.us/alexander/edition.asp?id=490. This is the problem with Republicans. They support money over ideology. The only way you're going to change that at the ballot box is by first revoking Universal Suffrage and not allow idiots to vote, even in Republican primaries. But since that's not a politically-correct thing to do, my opinion is that conservatives would be better served by changing the country in non-democratic means. The votes will follow the standards and principles of our time. And sadly, it seems that the Left is who currently controls these things.

Well please enlighten me. Please share some knowledge of this state that I fail to grasp. Or better yet, please expose some of of the gaps in my knowledge regarding politics in NC.

This forum, if you ever actually read from it, as opposed to continuously bloviating, contains a wealth of information and you can enlighten yourself to your heart's desire.

You should have done that long before you came here to play with the grownups.
