McALLEN, Texas -- A 42-year-old Mexican woman is accused of trying to smuggle 13,000 rounds of ammunition into Mexico, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.
Balbina Morales-Oscoy, of Posa Rica, Veracruz, was arrested at the Pharr international bridge Aug. 4 after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said they found 19 boxes of .22-caliber ammunition and about 2,500 rounds of .38 Super ammunition concealed in soft drink boxes in the vehicle she was driving.
She was charged with conspiracy to export defense articles, a felony.
A federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigation began Aug. 2, after ICE agents received information from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives regarding a vehicle with Mexican plates suspected of being used to export ammunition.
ICE agents said they watched Morales-Oscoy as she drove to various locations and bought ammunition and groceries, then stopped at a residence and unloaded and reloaded groceries into a minivan.
CBP officers at the international bridge found the ammunition and detained her. She has been in federal custody pending a detention hearing Thursday.
If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
My Grandpa lived in Illinois and had to have an FOID card. It's not only licensing and registration of where the guns are, but it's a particularly useful tool for the government to discourage firearms ownership and to create conditions whereby owners can innocently find themselves in trouble. If you don't have it with you and you have a gun, even locked in the trunk and disassembled, you're in trouble and they can take all your guns. If you forget to renew it, you're in trouble and they can take all your guns. Simply do nothing, and in a couple of years you automatically become a criminal.
Remind me to never visit Illinois. (not that I would anyways).
We don't even have stuff like that here in the Soviet of Washington.
Thank you for your thoughtful response...as compared to others here. Ultimately, you are correct, but in practice, not an issue. I know a number of fellow hunters who have run afoul of these regs. No tickets issued, no confiscations, just a stearn word to get in compliance. The game wardens can check to see if your hunting licence is registered to the person standing in front of them.
For hunters, like myself, the FOID has pushed poaching way down in this state. The only confiscations I know of are against poaching of deer, turkey and other game. Here there is no quarter given. If you are found with no hunting license, or the license you are carring doesn't match the FOID you have...you are going to lose your weapon, and maybe your vehicle too.
As a land owner...(I own a few hundered acres in northwest Illiniois), I catch people poaching on my land occasionally, and I want the wardens to confiscate. I've had horses hit by stray shots, and one hole in my guest house.
If I was out there more, (I live in close to Chicago), it would be easier to get rid of these guys, but there you go. Call me jaded, but there are a number of gun owners out there who really need them confiscated....idiots!
Where is your /sarc. tag?
***The .38 Super is used in a variation of the Colt 1911 pistol.***
In Mexico, the .45 ACP is a military round and not legal for civilians. As a result, the .38 Super rules!
"Nowhere in this article does this state that it was .22 cal. pistol or for that matter .22 cal rimfire LR ammunition."
I'm sure our media would have called .223 "military grade assault rifle ammunition". If there is one thing that you can trust in our media, it is their bias.
"Is there no identification necessary to purchase ammo in WV?"
No, and there never will be. That is reserved for communist strongholds like New York, California and Illinois.
Ooops.../sarc
You're probably right here. My fingers just typed faster than thinking it all the way through. You make a mistake like that on this site, and some like to jump on you with both feet and their steel-toed jack boots.
When I read the Title of the Thread, I thought 1300 "rounds" was 1300 fat Mexican women.
It's illegal to bring ammo into Mexico
Yes, but that's Mexico's law, not ours............
There are indeed idiots who should not have guns. I only want to see penalties for idiocy and not for mere ownership.
.38 Super is very popular in Mexico. The Mexican Constitution prohibits civilian ownership of military calibers. This has been interpreted to mean .45 ACP, 9mm, .357 but not .38 Super. So for years the .38 Super has been the pistol round of choice for Mexicans, including many police and security guards. They like the 1911, the gun for which the .38 Super is primarily chambered.
We don't have that foolishness in the Northwest either. No FOID in WA or OR, both Right To Carry states.
guns are illegal in Mexico. that is why they come to the Valley to shoot other Mexicans.
The screwup here is transporting ammunition into Mexico. There are strict regulations about the kinds of firearms and ammo that may be possessed by a non Mexican government employee. It's so strict that you can pretty much assume everything is prohibited. Taking 13,000 rounds wasn't an "oops". If she forgot about a 50 rd box in a jacket pocket, the ammo would have been confiscated and a warning issued. She had very different intentions.
As of today, I can't even take my favorite toothpaste on an aircraft...Nanny law!...so be it. So, if I have to carry one extra card to keep Juan Valdez, illegal immigrant from Rancho Mexicali or wherever from buying guns and ammo with a $12 fake drivers license and taking out my family and friends...so be it. We've got alot of illegals here, ya know?
I have said in prior posts..(did you read them?), that it's no big deal. Just like a drivers license, just reviewed more closely and used to compare to the hunting and other licenses required. Harder to duplicate and would just make someone bent on no good to go to....let's see..oh yeah...Utah to kill and maim because they give out gunpowder like candy with no checks whatsoever.
OK, you keep the crazies and I'll be happy to carry my "extra" license. I'll leave my toothpaste at home(like you), remember I can't drive legally without a driver's license(like you), and know that there is one more check before an illegal in this state can get a weapon(unlike you).
