Dearbornistan terror arrests:
Flight docs and 600+ tracphones

Busted (hat tip: Paul):

Two men were charged Wednesday with money laundering in support of terrorism after authorities said they found airplane passenger lists and information on airport security checkpoints in their car.

Deputies stopped Osama Sabhi Abulhassan, 20, and Ali Houssaiky, 20, both of Dearborn, Mich., on a traffic violation Tuesday and found the flight documents along with $11,000 cash and 12 phones in their car, Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said.

It wasn't clear what significance the airline information might have. Assistant County Prosecutor Susan Vessels declined to comment on whether the manifests were for upcoming flights or those that already flown. She also would not give the origin or destination of the flight or flights.

FBI spokesman Mike Brooks in Cincinnati said his office was notified about the arrests and had an agent investigating.

Abulhassan and Houssaiky admitted buying about 600 phones in recent months at stores in southeast Ohio, said sheriff's Maj. John Winstanley. They sold the phones to someone in Dearborn, a Detroit suburb, Winstanley said.

Vessels declined to say how the phones, cash or flight information involved terrorism.

Investigators going through the car after the pair were pulled over in Marietta also found a map that showed locations of Wal-Mart stores from Ohio through Kentucky, Tennessee and into North and South Carolina, Vessels said.

Flashback: Wal-mart, cellphones, suspected terrorism. Ring a bell? It should. Remember this from January:

Federal agents have launched an investigation into a surge in the purchase of large quantities of disposable cell phones by individuals from the Middle East and Pakistan, ABC News has learned.

The phones -- which do not require purchasers to sign a contract or have a credit card -- have many legitimate uses, and are popular with people who have bad credit or for use as emergency phones tucked away in glove compartments or tackle boxes. But since they can be difficult or impossible to track, law enforcement officials say the phones are widely used by criminal gangs and terrorists.

...Law enforcement officials say the phones were used to detonate the bombs terrorists used in the Madrid train attacks in March 2004.

...The FBI is closely monitoring the potentially dangerous development, which came to light following recent large-quantity purchases in California and Texas, officials confirmed.

In one New Year's Eve transaction at a Target store in Hemet, Calif., 150 disposable tracfones were purchased. Suspicious store employees notified police, who called in the FBI, law enforcement sources said.

In an earlier incident, at a Wal-mart store in Midland, Texas, on December 18, six individuals attempted to buy about 60 of the phones until store clerks became suspicious and notified the police. A Wal-mart spokesperson confirmed the incident.

Seems like it's only a matter of time before our 'luck' runs out.

I don't know if it's all luck. The UK and US governments and other governments in Europe, in particular, are likely in constant communication with each other, especially since 9/11/01. It's containing and protecting time-sensitive info which is probably the hardest part.

Mass murder is coming to the US, encouraged and aided by the democrat party and the NY Times.

The arrests in London and Ohio today were the result of investigations of long standing, meaning they began BEFORE the NY Times revealed vast aspects of our surveillance techniques and money tracing procedures.

We will not be so lucky next time. The blood of thousands of Americans will be on the hands of the evil NY Times and the democrat party,

Newsgeezer put "luck" in quotes. He didn't suggest we are lucky, I don't think. And we are not lucky. President Bush and Chertoff are working hard, I believe, to thwart numberous terrorist attack attempts-- with great success thus far. We will never know just how many times we have been saved from attack, or how close we might have come to getting attacked. If anyone thinks that attempts to kill Americans by terror acts have subsided since 9/11 they are wrong. We have just been able to stop them, so far. THIS, I believe, will be Bush 43's legacy-- although we won't know it for some time. Of course, certain dems in Congress know it, but due to their utter hatred of Bush, would never let it even be suggested how good a job he is doing.

That's what happens when your politics is your religion.

I have been one that has been very careful about avoiding the advocacy of "deport them all" that many have given in to when it came to Muslims because I felt it smacked of religious bigotry. Being part of a faith that has experienced it's share of bigotry, I didn't want to seem to be subjecting any others to that. Plus I'm never one to like to broadbrush entire groups based on the bad acts of a few.

But in light of this story and the terror plot broken up in the UK, I can no longer hold to my former position of tolerance towards Muslims. It is becoming an increasingly unavoidable fact that we are in a clash of civilizations with these people, and we simply cannot allow them to live among us. I believe we must take extraordinary war time measures to deport Muslims and the UK would be wise to do the same.

We simply cannot continue to tolerate the threat that is among us. No more student visas, no more tourist entries, no more of these people in our country anymore. That's it. They had the opportunity to prove they could be trusted. They have proven they cannot be. They have had every opportunity to turn in the radicals in their midsts and they don't. I'm sorry, but I'm done. No more.

FDR had the right idea in rounding up the Japanese. In a time of war, and I believe this is WWIII, you cannot have your enemy living among you. And I believe radical Islam has much more potential of grabbing hold of the loyalties of Muslims than mere nationality did for Japanese or German heritage Americans did during WWIII.

I know many will slam me for this, but I am just awake to reality now. I wanted to not see it, not believe it, not dare think it. But I can no longer avoid it.

Lutherans sure have funny names.

Whatever the case, I'm sure no muslims were involved...

This is very true. I attended a trial in Texas of a Bangladeshi convenience store owner who was pleading guilty to his part in an elaborate scheme to funnel money to Hamas. The plot involved a loan fraudulently obtained from a legitimate US bank and somehow distributed to a contact in another country (somebody named Mohammed Islam) who was going to get it the rest of the way to the terrorists.

The plot was so complicated it took every ounce of our concentration to understand the prosecutor's description of it. And I bet it took months or more of tracking and research to nail it down so that it could be stopped, first of all, and then presented in court. Research that will now probably be impossible, thanks to the Dems.

We have to be lucky (or good) every time. They only need to get lucky once. As they did 9/11/2001.

I hope to God that you are wrong, but I think you are probably correct.

What irritates me is that nothing will happen to the NY times or the anti-American left.

It must be serious. Even Marvin Kalb was saying they are a terrible threat--just last week he was of the opinion that terrorism dangers were highly overstated.

Gee, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Duh ...

Regarding these "disposable cell phones" -

There was a quick news spot on one of the morning radio news programs that mentioned these phones and specifically a chip used within the phone.

I'm interested if others can fill in some technical background on these phones.

1) are these phones designed to work on a specific U.S. based cell phone net only. (ie, Sprint, Alltel, Verizon, Cingular)?

2) are these phones digital or tri-mode?

3) are these phones capable of being used on foreign cell phone nets (Iran, Paki, Saudi, Syrian, etc)

4) what other U.S. friendly countries could these phones be used in? (UK, AU, etc)

If these are being used or planned use by terrorists - where is the likely target?
