Police statement on airline bombing plot
LONDON (Reuters) - Following is the full text of a statement issued by London Deputy Commissioner, Paul Stephenson on Thursday morning:
"We are confident that we have disrupted a plan by terrorists to cause untold death and destruction and commit mass murder.
The Commissioner has been fully briefed and he is at New Scotland Yard today. He and I want to pay tribute to officers from the Met's Anti-Terrorist Branch and the security services for the work they have undertaken to disrupt these activities.
We believe that the terrorists' aim was to smuggle explosives onto airplanes in hand luggage and to detonate these in flight.
We also believe that the intended targets were flights from the UK to the USA.
Overnight we have arrested 21 people. The majority of those arrests have been in London but we have also made arrests in Thames Valley and Birmingham. We are currently searching a number of addresses.
We are grateful to our colleagues in other force areas for their support.
As the operation got under way we spoke to community leaders to make them aware that a major anti-terrorist operation was taking place but without giving specific details about locations. This extensive dialogue will continue throughout the operation.
We would like to reassure the public that this operation was carried out with public safety upper most in our minds. This is a major operation, which will inevitably be lengthy and complex. The UK is now at the highest possible level of alert.
We will consider the threat in its wider sense and take whatever action is necessary to protect people in London and throughout the country.
Measures have already been put in place to restrict hand luggage taken onto aircraft. This will inevitably cause significant delay and we ask people to remain calm, patient and vigilant at this very difficult time.
Put simply this was a plot to commit mass murder on an unimaginable scale."

US prosecutors said the device was a "Mark II" "microbomb" constructed using Casio digital watches as described in Phase I of Operation Bojinka of which this was a test. On Flight 434, Yousef used one tenth of the explosive power he planned to use on eleven U.S. airliners in January of 1995. The explosive used was liquid nitroglycerin, which was disguised as a bottle of contact lens fluid. The wires he used were hidden in the heel of his shoe. At that time, metal detectors used in airports did not go down far enough to detect anything there.

I have a firm belief that most of our politicians would rather allow another 9/11 attack on US soil (which of course they're doing their best to make sure it comes to fruition) than to offend "American" Muslims in any way. And when (not IF) another Islamofascist attack happens here (sans the Seattle synagogue shootings), our politicos will be more concerned in protecting the Islamic communities with police officers defending those den of iniquities known as mosques. The Islamofascists, as Bush just called them, aka the militant Islamic fundamententalists, are trying to make it into a religious war by radicalizing the vast majority of Mudslims, who don't hold their views. We are not at war with Islam.
There is no possibility of winning a war if you don't recognize who your enemy is. It might be scary to some people that our enemy could number in the hundreds of millions, but that does not change the facts.
I don't buy your premise that we are at war with Islam and its one billion plus adherents.
Muslims were not a real concern to us before they got enough oil wealth to fund their jihads. Now, however, they have the wealth to buy the technology that can threaten our very existence. Those who believe, against all factual evidence, that our enemy is " a fringe group that is very small in numbers", put all of us in peril.
Typical response, long on generalizations and short on specifics. Is that why you did not respond to my questions, i.e.
Would you advocate closing our military facilities in Turkey, banning all arms sales to them, and calling for their removal from NATO?
There are 4 to 6 million American muslims in this country. How do you propose to deal with these "enemies?" What should be done with their Mosques and the practice of their religion?

Same here at Minneapolis-St. Paul Int'l. Airport security is also doing random vehicle searches.
