BEIJING China is to auction licences to foreigners to hunt wild animals, including endangered species, a newspaper said on Wednesday.
The government would auction licences based on types and numbers of wild animals, ranging from about $200 for a wolf, the only carnivore on the list, to as much as $40,000 for a yak, the Beijing Youth Daily said.
The auction, taking place on Sunday in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan, would be the first of its kind in Chinese history, it added.
"Some animals are from the first and second category of national wildlife protection, but with the strict limitations in place, the hunting could not destroy wild animal populations," the daily said.
The report made no mention of the endangered giant panda, some 1,500 of which survive in nature reserves in southwestern China.
Five western areas, including Qinghai, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces and the autonomous regions of Ningxia and Xinjiang, are involved in the auction.
Hunting of animals is popular with Chinese who like to eat exotic meats or use animal parts in medicines for their perceived aphrodisiac or medicinal properties.
But the hunting licences would be available only to foreigners, given China's strict rules on gun control, the daily said.
"Hunting is not slaughtering," it quoted an official at a wild animal protection department as saying.
Proceeds from the auction would be used for wild animal protection, the report said.
How much would you pay to hunt a panda? Somewhat gratuitous to write that isn't it. Gotta love Reuters.
Although I have an idea. If China executes the most people of any country, why not actually sell the privelage to tourists to execute Chinese prisoners? It could be a hunting game of sorts. Would need to be carefully controlled, but it could work. I bet that would make even more money.
no, no, that would be the best way for them to get the malodor that passes for a justice system exposed to the entire libbie world. ah, sure, we'd love to shoot this lady who endangered China by carrying an "Oust Hu" poster through the streets.
What the...........!

The Chinese are on to a winner here. How many of us would pay good money to destroy Pandas, the ubiquitous symbols of the PC environazi movement? I would use a bazooka, or maybe some kind of fuel-air device.
How can I shoot it? After all - it is just sitting there munching on bamboo and looking at me as if it expected me to walk on over and rub its ears...???
I used to make fun of how people would go "hunt" sheep on the big island of Hawaii. Wait, I still make fun of people who hunt sheep on the big island. :-)
Good point. Although I think they are ferocious enough that you wouldn't get close enough to scratch it behind the ears.
Do you think a Panda is good eatin'?
So you would kill an endangered species to piss off environmentalists.
Actually that I cannot agree with. I will assume you are just kidding, because that is not the way true hunters think.
A real hunter respects nature and his prey. A Panda would be a tropy and maybe a meal. Doing what you suggest would only strengthen the anti-hunting movement because it is childish and barbaric.
Maybe you should stick to video games.
Does this include liberals?
Liberals are still unfortunately quite plentiful. In the US they even breed. In Europe they have given up children and are waiting to die off and let the Muslims take over.
Need a large caliber rifle to hunt the wily and dangerous yak, for sure!
If you walked on over and rubbed its ears, it might nip you...
I've heard they can be ferocious.
If they didn't look so much like oversized teddy bears, they probably wouldn't be able to sucker us in.
A grizzly however would probably scare the [beep] out of me.
Yeah - I wonder how many people have been suckered into range by their teddy bear looks.
LOL! My old Freeper ID...
Yes! You must be very special among the FR administrators since ~yakboy redirects to ~caipirabob.
I hear that they are. They taste a little like Spotted Owl, but not as greasy as Bald Eagle.
