Mubarak rejects demand to freeze relations with Israel
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said that "relations with Israel serve as the best way to end the crisis," in response to opposition pressure calling on him to recall the Egyptian ambassador in Israel and the freezing of diplomatic relations between the countries.
Mubarak added that "we recalled our ambassador from Tel Aviv during the Lebanon war in 1982 and we did it again during the intifada. This step did not serve any purpose." (AFP)

IAF Bombs Western Beirut for First Time

(IsraelNN.com) Israeli Air Force planes Thursday bombed western Beirut for the first time in the retaliatory war against Hizbullah terrorists. The targets were a radio tower near the coast. Planes have dropped flyers warning residents of certain neighborhoods to leave their homes in order to escape injury.
Voice of Israel government radio reported that Israel knocked out a government radio transmitter.

Peretz: Israel Will Free the North from Terrorism

(IsraelNN.com) Defense Minister Amir Peretz and IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz took cover in a bomb shelter during a news conference in the north on Thursday. Ministers Peretz pledged that Israel "intends to free the north" of the threat of terrorists and rockets.
He added that every parent of every soldier should understand that the government has made every effort to end the war through diplomatic efforts.

Ground troops and fighter pilots continued their efforts on Thursday to wrest control of southern Lebanon from Hizbullah terrorists. Battles were especially fierce in the town of Marjayoun.
Soldiers began the combat day by entering Marjayoun, a central stronghold of Hizbullah terrorists and a major launching site for rocket attacks aimed at Israel’s northern communities. Two IDF soldiers were wounded as fierce fighting continued in the village throughout the day. The village of Aytaroun was also targeted by ground forces.
Clashes were reported in the village of Aytaroun, and the city of Ba’albek, located in the Lebanon Valley. Ba’albek was also strafed by Israel Air Force warplanes.
Troops also raided a building in the village of Mais al-Jabal, seizing aerial photographs of Kiryat Shmona and sophisticated night vision equipment.
Eight soldiers were wounded in the morning hours in various battles across southern Lebanon. An IDF reserves unit killed two terrorists in western Lebanon. Israel Air Force fighter pilots killed at least three others. Seven other terrorists were killed in firefights in the south of the country.
In Beirut, leaflets were dropped in central part of the capital city and Lebanese government compound for the first time, advising residents to leave for their own safety. Two people were lightly wounded in an IAF air strike on central Beirut as well.
In northern Lebanon, the IDF dropped leaflets warning residents to stay indoors and informing them that any truck on the roads after 8:00 pm will be targeted by IAF warplanes.
In other IAF action, fighter jetsstruck roads connecting Lebanon with Syria. Also hit was a minibus near the eastern Lebanese town of Raiyak, using an Israeli drone. One person was killed in that attack, according to local sources.

Some 110 rockets land on northern communities Thursday. In the afternoon, barrages land near Nahariya, Maalot. Mother and 5 year old son killed in the morning near Carmiel

Barrage of rockets in the Galilee: A number or rockets landed Thursday afternoon near Maalot and several rockets landed near Nahariya, one of them hitting and setting fire to a home. Fire crews are working to contain the blaze and no casualties have been reported.
Since the morning, some 110 rockets have been launched at northern Israel. Most of the rockets landed near Kiryat Shmona and Nahariya. The remainder landed in areas of the western Galilee, the Galilee panhandle and Tiberias.
Tragedy strikes
Thursday morning Maryam Asadi, 26, and her five year old son, Fathi Ahmed Asadi, were killed when a rocket directly hit their house in Dir el-Asad, near Carmiel. The woman's three year old son, and his grandmother who was also in the home, were both severely injured. Additionally, three people were lightly wounded and dozens were treated for shock.
Muhammad Ali, the first paramedic who arrived at the scene of the attack, said: "The situation was very difficult. When I arrived there was nothing left to do and there was no room for resuscitation. It's an extremely grave incident. To see a child in such a condition is horror."

Muhammad Badran, who lives next to the house which was hit, said that there were several others injured.
"This is a very difficult situation when civilians are killed. We are all here together, Arabs and Jews. The missile does not distinguish between ethnic groups. This was is not a war between Israel and Lebanon , but rather between the United States and Iran. They should fight this out themselves and not send Israel," he said.
Nasser Ahmed Fathalla Asadi, the brother of the family's father, told Ynet that he was sitting at the top floor of the house which was hit, but the rest of the family members were sitting behind a stone fence in the yard when the rocket fell.
"I heard the blast. I immediately went downstairs, I heard crying from the backyard and hurried there. I saw their little boy dead, he couldn’t have been helped anymore. I heard crying and terrible screams. It was just a terrible sight. It's very difficult to see your family's bodies lying there like that."
All across the Galilee
Since the hours of the morning, rockets also plagued other northern communities. In a rocket barrage fired at Tiberias a man was lightly wounded by shrapnel and three suffered from shock. They were evacuated to the Poria Hospital in the city.
A rocket hit a house in Carmiel, but there were no reports of injuries. Rockets also landed in Kiryat Shmona, Safed, the Golan Heights, Nahariya and Maal'ot, but there were no reports of injuries or damage. In the afternoon, a rocket fell near Haifa. There were no injuries, but property suffered damage.
Arab-Israeli casualties mount
The death of the toddler and his mother raised the death toll among Israeli Arab citizens killed on the home front during the war to 17 (more than 40 percent of all civilians killed).
On Wednesday, however, Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah turned during his speech to Haifa's Arab residents and asked them to leave the city so that they don’t get hurt. "To the Arabs of Haifa I say, we are sorry for your killed and wounded. I turn to you and ask that you leave this city," he said.
