A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.

It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.

During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.

Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.

The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.

Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.

Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

False dichotomy, since in political reality, the useless mobile homes have been funded, but the security has not.

Oh, no, that idea about random seats that popped into my head in reading this threat was not meant to be instead of profiling, but in addition to it. Profiling takes place at security or at the street or entrance to the airport ten blocks away. I'm for profiling 100%. Just thought that another layer of deterrent couldn't hurt or might help.

I'm having trouble keeping up. I'm on FR here trying to keep up with the latest news, on the IM with my daughter in the UK at my fathers house, on the phone with them on and off since the news broke. My daughter was coming home and I was going over to take her place to look after my father but we've agreed to just stay put for now.

Something just crossed my numb brain....since we can't take any hand luggage or have anything in our pockets will the muslims be made to take their turbins off. Seems only fair to me. They could have a hell of a lot concealed in one of those sheets.

I wonder if murtha will be making an announcement later this morning about an immediate pullout from Iraq again? He's as much to blame for this as the terrorists since he's their main cheerleader and encourages them every chance he gets.
