A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

Windows Update, critical patch - it automatically reboots your computer if you have auto-updates on. It got my computer last night.I could have sworn we had that turned off. Will have to check it out.

Parliament has known about this of a month. The American CIA and FBI have been involved. Blair briefed Bush for months and on his last trip here.Which means Ranking Member Dems would have known...and have had a month to get their talking points together. Let's see. Oh yeah! The I guess you're SOL. I keep all my personal information on my person or in my home pc. (There's always GoToMyPC...with that software you can access your pc from anywhere there's a computer and internet hookup.) I don't claim to have all the answers, but I'd say you need to join me on the front lines of stamping out this menace. Then air travel regs can return to a more user-friendly system.

I wonder if this was why the press conference from Crawford was NOT live. This is what they did after 9/11...restricted live access.Most "live" White House fireside press conferences with foreign dignitaries I've seen have been videotaped and fed to the media through the White House media feed. The only ones I am aware of that are actually live are the ones with the President Bush standing at podiums.

I didn't like the sound of Scotland Yard calling up all major imams in Britain before the raids in order to notify them. What? Did they really do that? If so then how incredibly stupid.
