Acclaimed actor-comedian Robin Williams has checked himself into rehab to battle alcoholism.
According to "Access Hollywood," Williams' publicist announced the actor's decision to seek treatment.
"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."
No further details were made available.
Williams made his mark on the television sitcom "Mork and Mindy" before starring in a string of hit feature films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Aladdin," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Dead Poets Society."
He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for the drama "Good Will Hunting."
Williams' recent roles include the hit family comedies "Robots" and "RV." He also starred in the thriller "The Night Listener" over the weekend, but the film faired poorly at the box office, opening in 10th place.
The genie's voice in Aladdin is the only performance of his I have ever enjoyed. His rapid-fire-guy-on-coke routine does nothing for me.
He played a great tortured soul madman in The Fisher King, IMO.
I wish him the best with his treatment though, even if he is a hump.
Can't stand him but have enjoyed a few of his movies, although none memorable.
I've often thought he was funny. But I believe his wife must be batty to live in the same home with him. He would drive anyone NUTS with his hyperactivity.
The first time I saw "Reality: What a Concept," I was stunned at what they showed as the credits rolled . . . Williams was sitting on the ground backstage, leaning up against a curtained wall. His pupils were so large, they ate up the color in his eyes.
If he wasn't trippin' balz when that was filmed, then I'm a flamingo.
I have to agree. His humor hasn't always been my favorite kind. I tend to think Mork from Ork, and I didn't care much for Mork, but that role did help him get his foot in the door. But his acting, as in recent roles as psychos, such as in 'Insomnia' is quite chilling. I wish him well.

Have you ever seen him improvise? His type of comedy may not appeal to all, but a "johnny one note". Have to heartily disagree with you on that one.

He is a gifted actor, a great comedian, and a tortured genius. Hope he and Mel have a new project together when they sober up. ;-)

What was that movie where his wife committed suicide and he had to go find her in some sort of hell. That was a great movie.
he was drinking again when it was discovered he was plugging the baby sitter/nanny in their house,what is with dems. one of the hideous kennedys' also left wife for the nanny he was plugging and robin had the audacity to question RUSH's morals during his vacation
I've seen a lot of comedians live, in small venues. Only two brought down the house - Milton Berle and Williams.
Williams was having so much fun after two hours he had to be chased off the stage. He would have stayed all night.
If I got hung up on any entertainer's substance abuse, I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything. The list is endless.
That surprised the tar out of me. And as such, he should get the blessing of those who support the troops.
