Robin Williams Checks Self Into Rehab
The Indy Channel ^ | August 9, 2006 | AP

Acclaimed actor-comedian Robin Williams has checked himself into rehab to battle alcoholism.

According to "Access Hollywood," Williams' publicist announced the actor's decision to seek treatment.

"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."

No further details were made available.

Williams made his mark on the television sitcom "Mork and Mindy" before starring in a string of hit feature films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Aladdin," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Dead Poets Society."

He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for the drama "Good Will Hunting."

Williams' recent roles include the hit family comedies "Robots" and "RV." He also starred in the thriller "The Night Listener" over the weekend, but the film faired poorly at the box office, opening in 10th place.

I wish him well, he has been a staunch supporter of the troops and has been to see them many times in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

"found himself drinking again"

Did he just stumble upon himself, or did someone tell him where to find himself?

Not intending to invite flames, but I can't think of a single Williams movie or show (except possibly Goodwill Hunting) that I enjoyed. I guess I don't get his humor.

I wish him well. He seems like a decent guy. He's a good actor. I can't stand his humor though. If he's on Leno or another show, I have to change the channel. Too wild, almost as if he took a fistful of speed.

He's been doing the Mork and Mindy thing since forever. I am bored by him myself.

What is funny is when other comedians imitate him. Many do and it isn't difficult fwiw.

I doubt it. Even though William's comedy is nothing more than the rantings of a coke-fiend.

I don't care for his work, but I hope he recovers quickly and fully.

There are some who see parallels between his approach and that of Jonathan Winters.

BTW, 2004's Comic Book: The Movie reunited Winters with Sid Caesar (I think the scene was improvised).

Ok, I accept your characterization. So is he a good comedian, or a good actor? He can't be both.
