There are some who see parallels between his approach and that of Jonathan Winters.

BTW, 2004's Comic Book: The Movie reunited Winters with Sid Caesar (I think the scene was improvised).

I remember reading once that Winters was his hero and the one comedian he most wanted to emulate.

From what I understand, Winters had been his idol for ages and I think they are now friends. Saw one interview with the two of them together at Winters' home. They were picking up everyday objects and doing whole routines around them...just off the top of their heads. No scripting. You have to have enormous talent to be able to do that.
