Robin Williams Checks Self Into Rehab
The Indy Channel ^ | August 9, 2006 | AP

Posted on 08/09/2006 12:40:08 PM PDT by Abathar

Acclaimed actor-comedian Robin Williams has checked himself into rehab to battle alcoholism.

According to "Access Hollywood," Williams' publicist announced the actor's decision to seek treatment.

"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."

No further details were made available.

Williams made his mark on the television sitcom "Mork and Mindy" before starring in a string of hit feature films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Aladdin," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Dead Poets Society."

He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for the drama "Good Will Hunting."

Williams' recent roles include the hit family comedies "Robots" and "RV." He also starred in the thriller "The Night Listener" over the weekend, but the film faired poorly at the box office, opening in 10th place.

"found himself drinking again"

usually, it's someone else that finds me, AFTER drinking again.

Oooohhh the Gibson effect is working. He's getting help before he ruins his career by saying something while drunk that will sink him. Good job Mel!

"Nobody has more talent than he does. Nobody."

The extremely thin line between genius and insanity.

He is talented. The problem is that whenever I have seen him, and he wasn't reading from a script, his talents have descended into dick jokes and general filth. I wish he would discipline himself more and perhaps this trip to rehab will help. I wish him well.

"I guess I don't get his humor."

I guess I make two. I think he's a coke freak.

Good comedians are almost always good actors--timing, I guess. Actors often make for bad comedy, however. What I can't stand are the roles Williams chose-- so shmaltzy you could gag. He is amazing when on an improv roll.

Yes, better get that checked before getting drunk and going on a pro-Isreal rant.

I wish him well, he has been a staunch supporter of the troops and has been to see them many times in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Of all the stars who've been to entertain our troops, I didn't realize he was among them. I wish him well, also, and a full recovery.

Even though William's comedy is nothing more than the rantings of a coke-fiend.

Nah. I know Robin in college. That was really before cocaine. He's funny sober and he's funny stoned. He's just funny. He was actually a LOT funnier then than he is now. After lunch, your belly would hurt from laughing so hard.

Hope he gets control of the problem. It's a bear.

Jay Leno nicely set up Williams by asking for his opinion about the recent Viagra story concerning Limbaugh. Williams answered: “First of all, it seems a little redundant for him to take Viagra. You know, the fact that he takes it he gets taller.

Williams continued: “I mean, why do you need Viagra? It’s a hard thing when he’s a big pr—ck already.

Next, Williams moved on to more drug references:“Where was he staying in the Caribbean? Club Medicated?”

One Hour Photo made me cry. It's a rare film that does that.

"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again"

So what, he woke up one morning and there was a bottle glued to his face?

Maybe Mel's recent woes have given him pause, it's good he's seeking help. Maybe Mel's public woes have at least had some positive help, encouraging those in need to seek help.

Could be worse. His career could have descended to the Steve Martin level.

I enjoyed "Hook" - except for julia roberts as tinkerbell. Robin Williams was very entertaining. The part suited him well. (you know - a man who doesn't want to grow up!)

There have been rumors in the past that people went to AA in Hollywood (even if they weren't drinking) to make deals; so many movers and shakers were there.
