ROME If you get mugged in Naples, don't fight back.
An American tourist was beaten by an angry mob in the streets of the southern Italian city after he chased down two men who had just stolen his camera, police said Wednesday.

The American chased the thieves into a narrow alley when a group of local residents attacked him with punches and kicks, allowing the muggers to escape, Naples police said in a statement.

In the US, he'd be dead. Not too bright.
Sounds like a Muslim mob MO.
Well big bump to the man from Utah.
The population of Naples is more than a million people, about 5,000 of which are Muslim. The chances he ran into a Muslim, much less a group of them, are really, really low.
This was more likely mob-related. The attackers could've been made men or relatives or employees of such, and not aiding them could've been very costly for residents.
I wonder how much longer until the Muslims take over Italy and turn St. Peters in the Vatican into a mosque?
I bet those "Italians" were from the middle east.
Wrong. Depending on the state, he would have DRAWN DOWN on the robbers and hopefully given them an eternal celestial dirtnap.
I've been to Italy. There are plenty of non-Muslim dirtballs there. This is high season for fleecing the tourii. Many there feel entitled to take whatever they can off of visitors. They figure, hey, it's our place, you come here you gotta pay. Also there's their infamous clannishness. This tale sounds plenty Italian to me.
Bella Napoli!!
I'll bet they do.
Very unlikely that it was Muslim-related. More likely, just a bunch of Italian goons. Naples is pretty much the petty theft capital of the world. I have distant relatives in Italy who live near Naples, but they're unwilling to drive into the city - apparently, their auto insurance policies do not cover parking in Naples.
Wonder if he had naked pictures of his wife on that camera?
Naah. That only happens in the movies.
Yep sir, it is always the right thing to do to try to resist crime and thwart criminals. It is more honorable to take the ACTIVE side of the old Catch-22, "Life is too fragile to take risks and too short not to".
We have less institutionalized bribe-taking in this country than most just because some here still show outrage at it and other types of crime.
I wonder if the Utah man chased the mugger into an area known as The Gut. An area military personnel were ordered to stay away from while I was stationed there in the 70's.
These muggers must have been very organized and much bigger than the 2 on a scooter. BTW- they apparently did arrest the muggers.
The brawl is not unusual in a city that has occasionally seen large groups of residents siding with suspected criminals.
Last year, a crowd of some 200 people threw stones, bottles and food at police injuring 12 officers who had attempted to arrest two men for stealing a motorcycle.
Remind me to take Naples off my list of sites to visit.
Idiot tourist. Everyone knows not to go to southern Italy--it's infested with crime. They'll screw you any way they know how. If they don't steal your car stereo within seconds, they'll get you with impromptu "toll" roads, the old change-aroo at the currency counter, etc., etc.
For once, I can't attribute it to Muslims.
The guy is lucky to be still alive.
wonder what normal Italians think of these neighborhoods?
