Sheehan returns: "peace mom" back in Central Texas
Waco Tribune Herald ^ | August 8, 2006 | Tim Woods

CRAWFORD — Cindy Sheehan is back in town.

After flying in from Jordan on Saturday night, Sheehan led a day of anti-war protests that culminated in an afternoon march in heat exceeding 100 degrees from the site of Camp Casey I to a checkpoint outside President Bush’s ranch. The president visited Sunday with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

About 40 protesters joined Sheehan, many toting signs that read “The War is A Lie” and “Bush Betrayed Our Troops,” while Sheehan carried a sign asking “For What Noble Cause?”

The march followed a short protest at the Crawford Peace House, where about 50 people gathered to voice their displeasure about Israel’s attacks in Lebanon.

Sheehan’s arrival attracted the usual media frenzy. McLennan County sheriff’s deputies also were out in full force, some issuing citations for violations of an ordinance passed in September prohibiting parking on roads around the Bush ranch. Media members were among those cited.

Sheehan said that she intends to stay in Crawford — on her recently purchased land not far from Bush’s ranch — until Sept. 3.

Her goal is the same as last August when she came to Crawford: to meet with the president, whose stay is expected to be about 10 days.

“I want to meet with the president and ask him ‘for what noble cause?’ ” Sheehan said as she began the more than mile-long march to the checkpoint. “He still hasn’t met with me and answered that question.”

There has been no indication that the president plans to meet with Sheehan, she said.

“It’s still status quo, I think,” Sheehan said. “But this time, if he meets with me, we’re still going to stay because we’ve got the property now. It’s turned from, not just a place to hold George Bush accountable, but it’s also a place where peace people gather to get re-energized and refreshed for the struggle. And we’ll be here every time he’s supposed to be on vacation.”

Bush met with Sheehan and other parents of slain soldiers after Sheehan’s son, Casey, was killed in action in Iraq in April 2004. He has not met with her since she began her vigil last August.

Sheehan said that after Bush’s presidential term expires, she plans to donate her land to the city of Crawford to be used as a park named after her son.

When the procession arrived at the checkpoint, Sheehan told one of the secret service agents that she was there to invite Bush to speak with her and then sat down in a chair on the side of the road.

As the group of protesters crowded around the checkpoint, they chanted, “This is what democracy looks like! This is what democracy sounds like!”

Not everybody was there to protest the war, however.

Missy Overton, of Lubbock, was in town to see Crawford with her family when they unexpectedly happened upon the protest. Overton said she disagrees with Sheehan’s stance on the war.

“I think it’s awful,” Overton said of Sheehan’s quest to have American troops withdrawn from Iraq. “I believe that we’re at war because we have to be at war and a lot of what she stands for doesn’t make sense . . . Bush did not kill her son. And she spent his insurance money on buying property out here. I think it’s ridiculous and I think that she’s ruining his memory.”

She can do what she wants, as far as I'm concerned. Just as long as the secret service is close behind.

After flying in from Jordan on Saturday night

She's a professional malcontent who is obviously bankrolled by major donations. My question is -- if one wanted to foot the bill to fund a high-profile symbol of the anti-war movement, is Cindy Sheehan the best face for that movement that they could find?

Has anybody checked the zoning on the "plot" that she "bought" in Crawford? Can she park 50+ people there? I bet there's a good chance it's *wayyyyy* over-accupied for its zoning, even in a small town like Crawford.

And where were they when Hezbollah was firing rockets into Israel?

you are assuming the media's numbers are accurate doesn't look like 40-50 people even if you count the people in both pics and the media

Hadn't seen the pics...

Hey, I figure give 'em the benefit of the doubt and accept their "50 people" claim. Then run them off for making an illegal ad hoc campground.

When is peace associated with the gay rights movement? What are the rainbow flags doing there? This is just painful

And hopefully the city will have the common sense to say, "Thanks, but no thanks."
