WSJ: Scholar Warns Iran's Ahmadinejad May Have 'Cataclysmic Events' In Mind For August 22 Tue Aug 08 2006 10:22:35 ET

In a WALL STREET JOURNAL op-ed Tuesday, Princeton's Bernard Lewis writes: "There is a radical difference between the Islamic Republic of Iran and other governments with nuclear weapons. This difference is expressed in what can only be described as the apocalyptic worldview of Iran's present rulers."

"In Islam as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time -- Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined."

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the US about nuclear development by Aug. 22," which this year corresponds "to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to 'the farthest mosque,' usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1).

"This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind."

Any nuclear attack by Iran on the U.S. or on any U.S. ally should be responded to IN KIND. Not with deployment of UN Peacekeepers or even the (God Bless Them) 101st Airborne...but with nuclear weaponry.

That would shut the islamists up real thuckin' fast.

Explain to me which Western city will be destroyed that wouldn't result in Tehran being turned into a giant crater? I see nuclear weaponry as an instrument of blackmail for Iran. Using it will ensure their demise.

What I've presumed from the beginning of this whole mess is that Israel is a feint. Once Iran has nuclear weaponry, they will invade Saudi Arabia, secure their oil fields, strangle our economy, and become a bona fide superpower. If they want, they can point their weapon at Paris or Rome or Tel Aviv and dare us to stop them from setting up the new Persian Empire with the Saudi oil fields as their crown jewel.

someone may have the proper reference for the following and correct me if wrong:

There was no Jewish temple or islamic mosque in Jerusalem on the mount at that time (prior to 622 AD) until approx. 700 AD. islam had only started locally in 622AD.
- foolish wild imagination - beliefs have consequences.

"Paris Hilton’s music album set for August 22 debut"

So that's their plan? I suspect they are up to something far more sinister. Could it be a

Yoko Ono Album!

Why would the president of (a republic) object to the existence of that (same) republic?

Exactly the same situation we will face the next time a Demoncrat takes office.

What I would love to see this crackpot do is launch a nuclear-tipped missile that fails and takes out his own nuclear development program and to have the fallout from his weapon blown into Qom (his allegedly "holy" city) and Teheran wiping out all of his Revolutionary Guards and most of his military.

Bring it on. Nothing he can do to us is as bad as what we can do to him.

That is true, but then what? The world will change forever as we know it. Panic will be stricken in the hearts of all men and women on this planet, then what? I'll tell you, these peace nicks dummies are going to demand disarmament and we will give in because America is evil, to them, for wiping a country off the map. Then evil wins. Its a no win situation for America, either way we lose. I fear the future, not for me, but my children. What can we do, we can talk tough, but that will get us no where. We can give in, but the same outcome. My only solution, is to pray and pray hard. Hopefully, Our God, Jesus Christ, the one true God, will smite this Amanjaboob to Hell where he belongs. That's is our hope.

Question is how are they going to set it up and launch it without anyone knowing it came from Iran?

Other thoughts:

1) North Korea has been very quiet since their little fireworks show. The quiet dogs are often the one that bite. I always felt that was just a distraction, but have never seen anything to make it more than a hunch.

2) Nasrallah said if Israel hit Beirut, which they have, Hezbollah would hit Tel Aviv. Perhaps Iran has their nuke in Lebanon on a relatively easy to conceal missile. What is the point of Hezbollah throwing darts at Isreal as they have for the past couple weeks?

3) Imasgoodasdead needs to find out if the story about the virgins is true - very soon.

The question is, has GWB informed Ahmadinejad that any funny business on the 22, and Iran ceases to exist?

That's some interesting speculation; I'd think the FBI would put out pictures of these students.

"What I've presumed from the beginning of this whole mess is that Israel is a feint. Once Iran has nuclear weaponry, they will invade Saudi Arabia, secure their oil fields, strangle our economy, and become a bona fide superpower."

Yes. I agree with that assessment. It's both a feint and a means to further pitch the Saudis against the Shiite element within their own borders, in the northeast oil fields. They've already "invaded" SA, they just want to turn the Saudi Shiite contingent into another radical Hezbollah.

I think the above will be attempted BEFORE they acquire the means or delivery route for a nuclear attack on a Western city. Such an attack will be attempted via smuggling something in I think, maybe using AQ. Estimates have put them 3 years away from a workable device. 1 year to try and smuggle it in, my guess is they attempt it four years from now.

Knowing the hatred Russia and China (and parts of Europe) have for us, they will probably pressure us not to escalate with a nuke retaliation. I suspect the administration of that time will capitulate and use a only a conventional response, out of fear/respect for MAD.

Speculation yes, but I am very concerned about it.

Not all "prophecy" concerns "The End of the World". Some foretell of horrendous events that will transpire and have nothing to do with the end times. People talk of the "Battle of Armageddon", but if you actually read the prophecy, no battle takes place. The armies and allies of "Gog" are simply destroyed in place. Soldiers either fall dead or are killed by their fellow soldiers and allies, fighting in total confusion. The prophecy does specifically mention Persia (Iran), Ethiopia (Cush) and Libya (Put), along with troops from many other "nations" allied to destroy Israel. Somalia (Recently taken over by Taliban style Islamo-fascists) could also be construed as "Cush". It also refers to Sheba (Yemen) and Dedan (Arabia) and Tarshish (Spain) as sitting on the sidelines and not contributing to Gog's hordes...............
