The 30-year reign of Shamsud-din Ali, the once politically connected Muslim cleric who rubbed elbows with Mayor Street, U.S. Rep. Bob Brady and Gov. Rendell, is over at a West Philadelphia mosque.

Ali's role in the government corruption probe became public Oct. 8, 2003 - the day after a bug was discovered in Mayor Street's office - when the FBI raided the imam's Melrose Park home and former Mount Airy office.
Are they saying that Ali planted the bug? It's hard to tell from the way they've worded the sentence.

Not sure if the new guy will be any better, but it is refreshing to see that they were able to vote on who their religious leader would be.

IIRC, the FBI planted it, and Street announced it (probably to score points with angry black constituents, and to tip off his shady friends). The editing of news articles is atrocious...
