Men at work ( More Adnan Hajj fake photos )
Power line ^ | August 07, 2006 | Scott

Posted on 08/07/2006 10:23:05 AM PDT by george76

Page 1 above the fold in yesterday's New York Times featured a photo (below) by our new acquaintance Adnan Hajj.

I suspect that not all is as it appears to be in the photo, and somehow doubt that Times readers will ever learn why that might be the case.

The Reuters caption reads: "A severely wounded Lebanese civilian is carried away on a stretcher at Maameltain bridge, after it was targeted by Israeli air strikes, in the north of Beirut August 4, 2006. (Adnan Hajj/Reuters)" (Thanks to reader David Butz.)

This may be a staged photo but it is certainly not manipulated.

Agreed. But it looks pretty badly staged. Who keeps a foot long stretcher around?

Before Reuters pulled the photos from their database there were at least six photos of this guy from different angles and distances. This may be a staged photo but it is certainly not manipulated.

I would venture a guess that the photog combined two images for this one. I cannot see where this guy is being supported - so for me to believe this photo was not manipulated, I have to believe the man could levitate.

Or that the man is being captured mid-motion. They don't have to actually hold the position to get the photo, he could have been dropped on the ground a second later. From the look on his face...

Q: How do I seach on the internet for a screen shot from the front page of NYT for this month?

On an emergency stretcher like that, the orange fabric would have periodic holes in the fabric so rescuers could grab the pole with their hands.

I don't see that gap in the fabric as evidence of any fraud.

Is that the white tee shirt guy? The wounded man I mean. Or the alleged wounded man

Is he not a civilian?

You must be the person to ask. I don't know if there is a prize or not but I'm sure Israelis, and US troops in Iraq, would love to know the answer.

How can one tell if he is a civilian or not? Is he in uniform? Out of uniform (what uniform do the terrorists wear)? Is he a civilian that only helps Hezbolla part time? More.

Can you provide any answers?

I agree. I don't see how that man can actually be on that litter.

The material is not being stretched appropriately as if it were bearing his weight in the position he is shown on the litter.

The way people are holding the litter, they could not hold his weight.

There's no other support structure shown that could be holding his weight. There's no cart underneath. If the were sliding the litter off of a cart towards off to the right of the picture you would see at least half of the people helping slide them off of the cart as well as needing more effort to support his head.

There's too big of a gap without anyone there, especially for such a simple type of litter

I'd done enough rescue training and mock rescues to know you simply can't carry someone that size in that way.

Something is seriously wrong with that picture.

But where is the rest of the pole? Note the purple circle where the pole should be sticking out. Also note that the fabric of the "stretcher" is not taut, as it would be if someone were actually lying on it.

In this one the metal pole continues past his hand. Is this Green Helmet guy?

I really don't see any evidence of Photoshopping. Blow it up and show me the pixels, and I may change my mind.

The proposition that it's a staged photo from another time and/or location is entirely plausible.

Why don't you tell us what is wrong with the picture?

The cameraman behind everyone is a dsigusting ghoul?

Or too many volunteers ready to carry someone out and E&E for a giant bullseye.

The pole is visible in wider shots.

It's quite possible that the scene was staged, but if it was, it's a lot easier to find a real stretcher to use in your staging than to pretend to use a stretcher and then use a computer to shoehorn a digital stretcher into the picture later.

Where's the palm trees?

That was my first thought. The palms and surroundings look more like Iraq than the more mountainous areas of middle/northern Lebanon.

I still don't see how the stretcher is being held up. But I do agree - probably staged instead of photoshopped. This doesn't look like a serious effort to move the guy to an ambulance.

The purple circle to the left is where the stretcher should appear from underneath his body, if he was actually lying on a stretcher

Sorry man but you're reaching too far on this one. The zoomed out picture shows the bar running under him .... around post 40.

Glad to see some folks who actually know something about Photoshop weighing in here. Thanks fellas.

One last point to make before I depart this embarrasing feeding frenzy. Reference the weight of the person and the support of the stretcher...see that thing under the arrow? It's called a wall.

Not so suspect as this photo from the New York Times the other day on Hezbollah victims of the Israeli "Overreaction" in Lebanon...
