The latest independent statewide poll shows Democratic challenger Bob Casey with a slight lead over Republican incumbent Rick Santorum in their hotly contested Senate race.
The poll found 45 percent of the voters questioned supported Casey, the state treasurer, while 39 percent supported Santorum, the No. 3 Senate Republican.
The poll of 550 registered voters was conducted from July 31 to Aug. 3 by The Morning Call of Allentown and the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion. The poll results carry a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
The poll, which appeared in Sunday editions of The Morning Call, found 43 percent viewed Santorum favorably and 34 percent unfavorably, compared to a 42-38 favorable-unfavorable split in March.
Casey notched a 39 percent favorability rating and a 21 percent unfavorable score, compared with a 38-18 split in March.
In mid-June, a Quinnipiac University poll of 1,076 registered voters found Casey with a 52 percent to 34 percent lead over Santorum.
In the governor's race, the new poll found Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell holds a 16-point lead over Republican challenger Lynn Swann, compared with only a slight advantage in April. Rendell had support from 51 percent of those surveyed and Swann 35 percent, compared to Rendell's 45-39 lead in late April.

FYI
How Would Mohammed Vote?
Plus, add 4 points to Santorum because the poll is registered voters and not "likely voters".
Sanatorum is going to pull this out.
Good point. Most people with families have something to do with their kids when these people call. What typical parent is gonna waste this this phone polling crap. "Who the hell are you calling my house!?!?"
I sure hope so. I've sent Santorum a little $$ -- not much, mind you, but I want to contribute what I can. I'd hate to lose his voice in the Senate. :-(
I'm glad to see this if it's real. I hope Santorum wins. I think I'll financially support him abd Blackwell and Steele who I really like alot.
Mohammed would blow-up at the polls.
Why have republicans always polled behind in
almost every race and yet win?
This is absolutely SPECTACULAR news. If the Dems can't unseat Santorum, they have ZERO chance of picking up the Senate. And more important, if they cannot unseat Santorum then there will be no Tidal Wave nationwide that they are hoping desperately for in order to impeach the President.
As much as I dislike your Senator DeWine, I think he is going to win his re-election bid.
On an aside, whenever DeWine and Voinovich make you cringe, think Hilary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. It will make you feel better.
or as everyone on the Ohio board will tell you, think John Glenn and Metzenbaum :)
I figure this is probably the last term for DeWiener and Voiny will retire after the next election.
I expect that Rick Santorum will poll more strongly than Conrad "Foot In Mouth" Burns.
do you think the polls are fake like kerry's on election day to discourage voters. I almost died when they announced that it was a dead heat in Ms. and to close to call in AL., well we now know it was a concerted planned plot to rig the election outcome
From your mouth to G-d's ears! I donate money to Rick's campaign every week. People should volunteer to go to Pennsylvania to help. The Demos are salivating at the chance to defeat Rick - it would be a terrible, terrible loss for us. He is a good guy. Casey accepted an endorsement from KATE MICHELMAN OF NARAL. He cannot truly be considered pro life.
