Republican governor candidate John Dendahl isn't exactly courting the teacher vote.
In reacting to test results announced this week, Dendahl said public school teachers skimp on basics because they are too busy teaching the "three S's sexuality, self-esteem and socialism."
"Instead of teaching the three R's Reading, Writing and 'rithmetic, schools are too busy trying to teach the three S's," Dendahl said in a statement this week in which he criticized Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson for academic problems in New Mexico public schools.
Dendahl, in a telephone interview with the Journal on Friday, said he believes "most of the teachers in schools are of a socialist inclination," adding that "they do indeed brainwash children against the capitalist system."
But the Santa Fe businessman and outspoken former state Republican Party chairman toned down his remarks later the same day in a follow-up e-mail to the Journal...
"It is my impression from conversations with parents, some personal experience in classrooms and a great deal of reading that many teachers, perhaps a majority, neither understand nor support the capitalist system," Dendahl said in the e-mail. "Many advocate views on economics that are socialist. Some punish students through the grading process for expressing conservative opinions."
Richardson campaign chairman Dave Contarino said Dendahl's comments were an insult to teachers. "Let me add another 'S' to that silly." Ellen Bernstein, president of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation, said Dendahl doesn't know what he's talking about.
Dendahl, who faces Richardson in the November general election, fired his initial salvo on the subject on Wednesday. He responded in a news release to this week's news that more than 400 of the state's 800 public schools were not making the required progress on federally mandated tests for reading and math skills.
New Mexico has more than 21,000 public-school teachers.

Unfortunately, some state Republican's feel they have to "explain" Dendahl's remarks. For example, State Republican Party chairman Allen Weh said Dendahl oversimplified in his initial remarks. He further said that the situation is more complex than described by Dendahl and those were his individual comments. "There are many, many great Americans who are educators," Weh said.
"snowballs chance in the New Mexico desert"
summer or winter?
We haven't had "winter" in a bunch of years so describe it to me, would you please?
There are some good people who lead, teach and work in public schools.
But the liberals are everywhere and their ideology is drilled into "educators" at the university level, where training is going on for future and existing teachers as mandated by law.
And there are plenty of liberals and liberal oriented people teaching propaganda and ideology in schools, make no mistake.
It was my experience in the 1970's as a student and remains my belief based on my contacts and experiences today.
Thanks Dave. I'm always interested in the politics in NM. It's always unpredictable.

I distinctly remember snow falling in SF last year.
Once.
And that snowball lasted how long exactly?
(For others who don't know, SF is at 7,000 ft. and not exactly a desert. For that they need to try Carlsbad, Las Cruces or Deming, though for the latter two Venice would be more appropriate given the floods of the past week.)
I experienced snow there during a visit in late 1975. Santa Fe, with its displays of farolitos, is one of my favorite places to travel during the Christmas season.
DOE?, DOH!
This was the same guy (Richardson) who offered Monica Lewinsky a job at the UN to shut her up.
She should have taken it.
Talk about a match made in Heaven.

Dendahl would get more teacher votes if he didn't make it so personal. He needs to target those who make up the cirriculum (the three S's). In most school districts, teachers who want to keep their jobs are forced to follow the cirriculum. Many would welcome teaching the basics (the three R's).
The destruction of traditional education in public schools has MUCH deeper roots. In most cases, it starts with the Superentindent and his/her cronies. Most all of them are of the same liberal ilk and believe in pushing their sick agendas onto children.
I very glad we have Mr. Dendahl to say thing what others are afraid to say. My wife, who is a first-grade teacher, is one who doesn't say a thing in fear of a reprisal from the NEA teachers.
Cedar Dave, speaking of snow, Santa Fe did have a huge snowfall a couple years ago(late '04/early '05). My kids and wife had five snow days, they didn't even have to make them up, lucky them
