We can't get rid of all the street lights?

Of course not! Astronomers have the same lighting needs as everyone else. We all need good quality, well-directed

OH! Gosh, for a second there, I thought these people were WEIRDOS, or something...

But not NOW...

Here, here....somewhat. Me? I love to grocery shop at midnight when the joints are less crowded. It bothers me to no end when I see some mouth-breathing, rednecky woman in the store at that hour WITH KIDS IN TOW. The other point is I live here in the desert and I KNOW the night sky is more beautiful with less light pollution. Stores etc are way overloighted at night anyway.

We have a few sections with those 'new lights'.

It is DAMN DANGEROUS to drive with them.

Can't I agree that there is too much overlighting? That there are useless expensive freeway lighting projects that just line the pockets of Cal-trans buddies and NOT be called a leftist?

Why is anything that is not spend, spend, spend or build, build, build, on this site eventually labled leftist?

I did not say it was a communist plot. I said it slammed capitalism.

Years ago I moved out into the boonies. I was awe struck with the night sky. Yet even more, that when people move to the contry to "get away from it all" the first thing they do is install their own personal 1KW street light and ruin the night sky.

I am all in favor of dark skies, but it aint gonna happen in my life time and I would hate to see it imposed us.

What a bunch of morons. Wanting the nights to be dark? What's next? Laws against noise pollution? I suppose people will start whining if I decide to set off fireworks at 3AM now.

I owned a house in the heart of nowhere. Many times our street light went out and during the new moon, I would run into things and basically cussed like a sailor as I fumbled to the front of the house. Don't miss it one bit, despite the fact that I could see the Milky Way.

Other times during the full moon, the light was so bright I could cut the grass or work on the house.

Guess the moon can only shed light in the new NannyState.

If you keep your light to yourself, have at it. Just don't shine it in the direction of my telescopes.

I concur. What amazes me is there are so many people afraid of the dark as evidenced by all the street lights. Personally, I like by property being dark at night. It makes it easier to see the 'perps with flashlights......

Is this a picture of light pollution or progress?

Progress

Does artificial light cause harm to plants and animals?

Couldn't care less.

Once again, someone equates light with sound. And once again, an illogical fallacy rears its ugly rear.

I am in the lighting business. This light polution issue is a growing one. Fortunately, there are many sensible solutions.

Lighting technology has grown to a point that you don't need to spend your energy dollar firing light up into the sky where it does no good. Go to a modern parking lot (if the owners/developer has embraced new technology) and check out the difference in where the light is directed. Modern commercial lighting doesn't need cause so much "noise" in the sky.

That, and some rube will buy 20 acres or so then proceed to give away 19 one acre plots to all his friends and relatives. And every one of them will need their very own street light. What's the point? Why not just stay in the city?
