Huh, much of the Canada glow is in the northern part of their western provinces. All those eskimos burning blubber lamps.

Here, let me give you a fine example: Proper flag etiquette calls for illuminating outdoor flags at night, and this almost certainly calls for upward illumination.

Or a light clamped on the pole top shining downward

When we moved to the country one of the nicest things was being able to see the stars again.

Of course, it was a bit safer there, too.

Why is anything that is not spend, spend, spend or build, build, build, on this site eventually labeled leftist?

Because lighting is a black and white issue ?

BUMP

I was trying to be funny.
Ted Levine is the actor that played the deranged killer in 'Silence of the Lambs'. Raised moths.
(plays the police chief in 'Monk' now)

That's REALLY funny. I have a "friend" named Ted who also raises moths!! I don't know his last name....

Believe me, I get assked about those particular moths ALL of the time (THe Death's Head Sphinx - Achertonia atropos.

However, in the movie, due to excessive U.S. regulation, they couldn't use that actual species (our gov't would not let them import them), so they had to use a local moth and use painted "press on nails" to get the proper pattern!

(our gov't would not let them import them),

Why is that?

We have about the most restrictive laws on insect importation in the world. Basically, our USDA are beureaucrats w/ power...so they use it. Mostly the regs are useless, don't stop anything, and are just another way for the feds to control you. Regs should be on a statewide basis...not federal. Alaska doesn't need the same restrictions as Florida. But, they will send out the armed agents and seize your stuff if you get caught with "foreign moths".

Most enthusiasts, ignore them.

Well, on the one hand, I think that the author goes overboard on the issue, but on the other hand, I really detest the use of excessive street lighting, and especially those extremely bright lights that seem to be prevalent in many cities. Light them, but cast the light downward onto the streets and sidewalks only, and don't over-light the neighborhoods.

I personally enjoy being able to see many stars at night. Couldn't do it when I lived near Cleveland, Ohio. Way too much sky glow.

Yet even more, that when people move to the contry to "get away from it all" the first thing they do is install their own personal 1KW street light and ruin the night sky.

Or for whatever reason, they feel the need to leave their garage lights on. Yea, it's a pet peeve of mine.

Sully777 has a problem with loud sounds, not with bright lights. Those who have a problem with the bright lights are just wackos.

Is this a picture of light pollution or progress?

Well. It's a picture of sloppiness.

Light aimed at the sky is completely wasted. If you can see it from 25000 miles in space....is it really necessary?

There's no need to reduce the light on the ground, just a proper reflector to aim it at the ground where it's needed.

Why should the night sky out in the country be brightened by burning coal and nukes?
