A day in the life of President Bush (8/5/06): photos & news

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush, and the dogs, are vacationing at their Crawford, TX, ranch for the next couple of week. However, no president is ever truly on vacation. Today, through White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, who is at the ranch, President Bush issued a statement saying he is pleased with the draft UN resolution regarding the war in the Middle East. Here is an excerpt from the widely circulated AP story:

Bush Happy With Draft U.N. Resolution
By NEDRA PICKLER, The Associated Press
Aug 5, 2006 12:11 PM (46 mins ago)

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush has signed off on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at ending fighting in the Mideast and is "happy with the progress being made," his spokesman said Saturday.

But the president knows there could be a long road before violence stops, White House press secretary Tony Snow said.

"I don't think he has any delusions about what lies ahead," said Snow, accompanying Bush on his vacation to his private ranch.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley arrived at the ranch Saturday to consult with Bush as the full Security Council began discussions on the agreement reached by France and the United States.

The draft calls for Hezbollah to stop all attacks and for Israel to stop "offensive military operations." But it would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.

Israel, backed by the U.S., has insisted it must have the right to respond if Hezbollah launches missiles against it.

In an important, but largely overlooked domestic story, Congress sent a major pension overhaul bill to President Bush yesterday for his signature. Here's an excerpt from the story on ABC News:

Congress Sends Major Pension Overhaul Legislation to President Bush
By JIM ABRAMS

WASHINGTON Aug 4, 2006 (AP)— Congress passed major pension legislation designed to assure American workers, including millions of baby boomers nearing the end of their working careers, that the pensions they have been promised will be there when they retire.

The Senate, in its last vote before adjourning for a four-week summer break, approved the 900-page bill that compels employers with defined-benefit pension plans to meet their funding obligations and seeks to prevent companies from terminating plans and shifting the financial burden to the taxpayer. The House passed the bill last week.

PRESIDENTIAL VACATION SCHEDULE: From the White House press gaggle by Tony Snow.

The President's day today: he got up early, received his national security briefing, recorded the radio address -- which is about border security and immigration. Then he went out and did some brush-cutting and trail-clearing, followed by a bike ride, and will be doing other vacation relaxation sort of things for the rest of the day.

The week ahead has more of the same, through Wednesday. On Thursday, the President will participate in a tour of Fox Valley Metal-Tech, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he will make a statement on the economy. While in Wisconsin, the President will attend a 'Gard for Congress' reception in Oneida, before returning to Crawford for the rest of the vacation, such as it is.

On the 11th, he'll attend a Republican National Committee reception and barbecue at Broken Spoke Ranch in Crawford. Then he'll spend Saturday in Crawford and return to the White House at a time to be determined on Sunday, the 13th.

The president plans to return to his ranch near the end of the month for a few days. But that trip is scheduled to be interrupted with other travel away from Texas, including a visit to the Gulf Coast to mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Thats a beautiful garden. The pergola looks exactly like mine that my brother made for me, except mine is all but hidden by kiwi vines. I like the use of the boulders in the garden too.

Funny how I used to scold my sisters for kissing the dog.

The town has a very decent bus system for the midwest, but I don't think there's service on Sundays and after the 'rush minutes' in the evening. Also, there don't seem to be a lot of ways to get from town to town. So, it will be useful to have a car, even if I take the bus to campus.

I am looking forward to driving out to the Amana Colonies, which are nearby, and maybe, if I get brave, a little further away to the Laura Ingalls Wilder house and the Field of Dreams farm.

I hope you can find an apartment within walking distance or bicycle distance. Using a car to campus may be difficult because of lack of parking but as a faculty member you may have a convenient parking lot. I am sure you will find what is best way when you get there.

I feel corrupted by capitalism and Big Oil, but I'm learning to live with it.

*snort*

Our daughter and I visited some friends in Tokyo last summer, and I really enjoyed using the Metro there. Our friends didn't own a car, and had a 15 min. walk to two train stations going different places, and we were able to go literally anywhere in the city, or even out of it from the main station, Shinjuku. I don't know if I'd want to have to walk 15 minutes each way every day, all the time, but it was actually good for me! I lost 10 pounds over the 10 days we were there, simply from the activity. Of course I gained it back when we got back home and I went back to my sedentary ways, but I know what's good for me, now!

Wow. Thanks for posting such awesome pics. Hard to believe that a third of Americans think the Prez let 9/11 happen when (as a parent) I can see the love this man and his wife have for kids. It brought tears to my eyes. Thanks again.

I was so touched when I first saw this photo of Bush and the Ground Zero search dog. So many have forgotten so much about that day...I wonder how many remember
those magnificent dogs.

Even though she's gone now, Spotty is my favorite of the Bush dogs. She was born in 1989, in the same year, but a few months before my beloved Annabelle and Wolfie. Spotty died early in 2004. The President and First Lady lovingly put her down because she was having seizures. My Wolfie died February 2004. Annabelle died the following year. I held her in my arms while the vet put her down. She had been having seizures.

So, in a very small, yet personally significant way, I have something in common with the first couple.

You're welcome, Jodi. That third of Americans are Leftists/Dems who WANT to believe the worst about this man just because he's a Republican who actively practices his Christian faith. They know the truth. They just willfully ignore it due to their own stupidity, hate and inability to put the nation's welfare above their own ambitions.

I sure as heck do, and so do many, if not most dog lovers. The Ground Zero rescue dogs were honored by the AKC at Westminister Dog Show the February after the attacks. Ever since, AKC has continued to honor service dogs at Westminister. I'm no big fan of AKC, but I do applaud them for continuing to honor service dogs in our post-9/11 era.

Oh, and BTW, Timeout, that GWB genuinely loves dogs is obvious with every photo of the President and a dog. Recently, on one of his trips to the border, the President visited with a K9 officer and his dog. The dog had a muzzle on and his body language was a little aggressive, if I recall. GWB did not back away or flinch. I don't save the news photos we post, but maybe snugs remembers that photo and might know where to get a copy for you, Timeout.

Hi :)

This is a wonderful theme you chose for the Dose. I think I have some photos I can contribute.
