PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush, and the dogs, are vacationing at their Crawford, TX, ranch for the next couple of week. However, no president is ever truly on vacation. Today, through White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, who is at the ranch, President Bush issued a statement saying he is pleased with the draft UN resolution regarding the war in the Middle East. Here is an excerpt from the widely circulated AP story:
Bush Happy With Draft U.N. Resolution
By NEDRA PICKLER, The Associated Press
Aug 5, 2006 12:11 PM (46 mins ago)CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush has signed off on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at ending fighting in the Mideast and is "happy with the progress being made," his spokesman said Saturday.
But the president knows there could be a long road before violence stops, White House press secretary Tony Snow said.
"I don't think he has any delusions about what lies ahead," said Snow, accompanying Bush on his vacation to his private ranch.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley arrived at the ranch Saturday to consult with Bush as the full Security Council began discussions on the agreement reached by France and the United States.
The draft calls for Hezbollah to stop all attacks and for Israel to stop "offensive military operations." But it would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.
Israel, backed by the U.S., has insisted it must have the right to respond if Hezbollah launches missiles against it.
In an important, but largely overlooked domestic story, Congress sent a major pension overhaul bill to President Bush yesterday for his signature. Here's an excerpt from the story on ABC News:
Congress Sends Major Pension Overhaul Legislation to President Bush
By JIM ABRAMSWASHINGTON Aug 4, 2006 (AP) Congress passed major pension legislation designed to assure American workers, including millions of baby boomers nearing the end of their working careers, that the pensions they have been promised will be there when they retire.
The Senate, in its last vote before adjourning for a four-week summer break, approved the 900-page bill that compels employers with defined-benefit pension plans to meet their funding obligations and seeks to prevent companies from terminating plans and shifting the financial burden to the taxpayer. The House passed the bill last week.
PRESIDENTIAL VACATION SCHEDULE: From the White House press gaggle by Tony Snow.
The President's day today: he got up early, received his national security briefing, recorded the radio address -- which is about border security and immigration. Then he went out and did some brush-cutting and trail-clearing, followed by a bike ride, and will be doing other vacation relaxation sort of things for the rest of the day.The week ahead has more of the same, through Wednesday. On Thursday, the President will participate in a tour of Fox Valley Metal-Tech, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he will make a statement on the economy. While in Wisconsin, the President will attend a 'Gard for Congress' reception in Oneida, before returning to Crawford for the rest of the vacation, such as it is.
On the 11th, he'll attend a Republican National Committee reception and barbecue at Broken Spoke Ranch in Crawford. Then he'll spend Saturday in Crawford and return to the White House at a time to be determined on Sunday, the 13th.
The president plans to return to his ranch near the end of the month for a few days. But that trip is scheduled to be interrupted with other travel away from Texas, including a visit to the Gulf Coast to mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
Yes, I sure did. Beautiful cat, with kind of unusual markings. Mostly tabby, but almost with a bit of calico thrown in for good measure.
William...grin. A proper British name. So he's a tom cat who likes a good brawl, LOL!
Here is another photo you will enjoy their pet sheep which are in a field at the bottom of the garden
And the carp in the lake
The photo of the sheep in that very green meadow surrounded by beautiful trees is not a typically American scene, perhaps except for a few areas in New England. Where your photos were taken is beautiful country. Almost like stepping back in time, somehow.
Sorry to hear about your mom. Prayers for you and your family.
I just love that photo! I don't think I have seen it before. It is incredibly touching (no pun intended!). Thank you so much for posting it.
CyberAnt, I am so very sorry for your loss. As others have said, grieve however you need to. God will give you the grace you need when you need it. I am so sorry.
Thanks Wolfstar, I appreciate that very much.
I've been letting loose at home a lot .. I just miss her very much. She came to live with me at the end of 2002, but within a year I could tell there was something terribly wrong. I managed to keep her at home until Sept of '05. We had so much in common, I was very disappointed I didn't have more time with her.
When I would stop by to see her after work, I would then end up crying all the way home. I'm sure I'll shed a lot more tears before I can move on.
"... we know that our loved ones are with the Lord, and in a better place, so that helps us deal with the loss, and we can remember the fun times we had with them."
Yes, our family too. My older sister said she wondered if our dad said to her, "what took you so long". It was great to laugh about it.
Thanks dmd .. I know God's grace is sufficient for me.
Thanks kitkat .. your prayers are precious to me.
I don't have a lot of firsthand experience with grief--but your statement tonight reminded me of something I experienced when my very beloved grandmother (for whom I am named) died. She suffered a lot physically the last few months, and also suffered from dementia (as I know your mom did). My mom was the only child living nearby and had to make the decisions, visit, etc. It was very difficult.
I remember expressing relief when my parents called to tell us that she had died. I knew that her suffering was over and she was in heaven. I didn't shed many tears at that time.
However, something unexpected happened about a year later. I would tear up when I thought about her--when I was doing something she would be interested in, when we visited my family and she wasn't there, when her birthday came around, etc. It was so surprising to me! She had been gone a year--why was I grieving then? I concluded that the remembrances of her last year and especially her last few months had faded, and I was now missing the grandmother that we all knew and loved. It was a strange and unexpected occurrence.
I don't know if your experience will be like that at all, but I thought I would share it.
Well, Wolfstar - you have given us a most beautiful Dose this evening. We're blessed to have this man as President at this time in our lives.
We just had dinner with friends who feel exactly the same way about the President as we do and I came away feeling so upbeat after talking about him this evening and then to find this fine thread -- it's really capped off our evening. Thank you.
What great photos, Snugs! Thank you for sharing. It wasn't a rainy day in England! :) I noticed that you have your flip-flops on. :) What do you do for your job? I don't think I know.
Snugs, I love your profile page. It is very entertaining.
It's funny that England has been borrowing ideas from the States on gardening, like the decking, whereas here many of the gardening magazines have articles on how to create an "English garden", especially what they term the "English cottage gardens". I love that gazebo, especially since its over the water.
Hi kiddo....I have to tell you that I just put Brandon to bed after we had a good time looking at the Dose....needless to say he loved the Santa Claus pics...lol
Thanks for the pictures Wolfstar. I haven't looked at them yet but wanted to thank you while you are still here.
Congratulations on passing your driving test. I guess you will need to drive in Iowa. Not much public transportation there.
