HAVANA, Cuba (AP) --
Former revolutionaries promised to keep fighting for Cuba on Saturday as the island beefed up security, saying it fears a U.S. attack during Fidel Castro's health crisis. The government, under the control of Castro's brother, Defense Minister Raul Castro, has mobilized citizen defense militias and asked military reservists to check in daily.
The White House has insisted no such threat exists, with press secretary Tony Snow dismissing the suggestion that the United States would attack the island as "absurd."
The Communist Party daily newspaper Granma issued a statement by the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution on its front page.
"We will continue working with the same revolutionary fervor that you taught us," the veterans' group assured Castro. It also expressed confidence that Castro would be back on his feet soon.
Cubans interviewed on state-run media also said Friday they would fight to the death against any invaders from the north, while the Communist Party daily Granma said, "We Cubans are prepared for the defense" of the island.

Reagan should have took these guys out. The Cuban people deserve better.
I haven't read through all the comments, but I doubt they fear a US attack nearly as much as they fear an internal revolution. So they prepare the troops to defend against an internal coup and blame Bush by claiming they fear an invasion from the US. Sounds like proof the island's still run by democrats.
Bingo!
And to use those troops to suppress any vassals that still decide to get uppity.
Castro must be dying!
Quick quick look away!!!!! America is attacking us!
It most likely means that Castro is dead or terminal and the fight for the power within Cuban commie elite is getting nasty.
Maybe someone gave Fidel a little extra special medicine in his IV drip!
When you surround yourself with murderers.... you act like Saint Joseph Stalin (blessed be his name to Dimocraps)!
"I haven't read through all the comments, but I doubt they fear a US attack nearly as much as they fear an internal revolution"
- EXACTAMUNDO!
I spent a vacation in Cuba a few years ago and had a guided tour of Havana. We passed the Swiss Embassy (which represents the US in that country). The Embassy grounds take up almost a city block, completely surrounded by about a 10 foot wall with guards stationed every 30 feet. When I asked why there were so many guards, I was told it was not to defend the Swiss from potential protesters, but they were there to prevent Cubans from, "going over the wall" to seek asylum.
Anybody seen Raul lately? The supposed heir hasn't even appeared - I wonder if there was a military coup and somebody took out Raul, as well.
Cuba does not have to worry at this time. The canoe designated to be used against her, should the need arise, is in the repair shop being refit for new paddles.
Don't laugh, they beat us last time.
spel chek, dude, spel chek.
Yeppers
I'm in :)
If theres any attack its going to be led by legions of Rush Limbaugh cigar afficionados targeting the tobacco fields........Thats all Cuba has thats of any worth.
To make sure they are not in possession of any improvised floatation devices.
Sounds to me like Castro is about to leave this life. A fact that might cuase an uprising among the natives. So therefore the commie's mobilize the troops so they don't get taken by surprise.
They will pale in comparison to the legions of old car nuts looking for parts! ;-)
